Mazda 6 2023 - start from 99 AED / day

The decision worth making before you book a mid-size sedan here is whether the engine is going to punish you at the pump. It is the first thing people ask when they rent a Mazda 6 2023 in Dubai rather than something a size down, and the answer is that a 2.5 costs less to run across a week than its capacity suggests. We hand this one over to drivers from 18, which most desks in the city will not do. Settle the fuel question and what is left to decide is simply whether a long, low sedan fits the shape of your week.

The pump bill, honestly

Mazda quotes 6.3 L/100 km as the manufacturer combined figure, and you should treat that as a laboratory result rather than a promise. Real Dubai driving, with the air conditioning working from the moment you get in and traffic doing what it does on a weekday morning, lands closer to 8 to 9 L/100 km. That is still respectable for a 2,488 cc engine, and it is the reason the 6 does not feel like a step up in running cost from a smaller car.

Tank size is where it quietly wins. Sixty-two litres at real-world consumption gives you around 700 km, which for most renters is one visit to a station across a full week. Smaller economy cars save you a few dirhams per fill and then make you do it twice as often, and in August a fuel stop is not a neutral experience.

The rest of the running cost is predictable. Your booking includes 300 km a day and extra kilometres are AED 0.5 each, so a return run to Abu Dhabi still leaves headroom on the day it happens. Salik charges as you pass under the gantries and any RTA fine raised during the rental comes back to you, both settled after the car is returned.

People, cases and the odd tight bay

The boot is deep and takes two large hard cases lying flat with soft bags stacked on top, which is enough for a couple on a long stay or a family of four arriving with sensible luggage. What it will not do is swallow tall or awkward things, because a saloon gives you a lip and a hinged lid rather than a proper opening. A folded pushchair is fine. A bicycle or a flat-pack purchase is not, and if that is the plan you want a hatchback or a crossover.

Inside, the 2,830 mm wheelbase is the figure that earns its place. Knee room in the back is generous for the class, so two adults sit behind two adults without anyone sliding a seat forward. The caveat is overhead, since the roofline drops toward the tail and anyone much over six foot will feel it on a longer drive. Four adults is the honest capacity. The middle rear seat works for a short hop and not much beyond it.

Length is the thing to plan around rather than width. At 4,870 mm the nose and tail sit proud of bays drawn for smaller cars, so reversing in is worth the ten seconds it costs. It also sits low. No UAE source publishes a ground clearance figure that the others agree with, so we will not quote one, but the shape is clear enough: take steep basement ramps and the taller residential humps slowly and square on, particularly with the boot loaded. Out on the road the size disappears entirely, and at 120 km/h on the highway the long wheelbase keeps the car flat and steady.

Sun, glass and the first two minutes

A low roof over a lot of glass is not the ideal recipe for a car parked outdoors in August, and the dashboard under that windscreen will be genuinely hot after a few hours. Pale paint helps the roof and bonnet a little, though it does nothing for what is behind the glass. A folding sunshade is worth the effort.

What works in your favour is volume, because there is far less air in a sedan cabin than in a crossover or a van. Open both front doors for a few seconds to let the worst of it out, then drive off rather than sitting still and waiting. The front is comfortable within two or three minutes. The back bench sits close enough to the front outlets that rear passengers are not left far behind, although belt buckles and seat cushions hold their heat longer than the air does. Where you leave the car parked changes more than any setting on the dial, so take the shaded space when it is offered.

Who should book something else

Take the 6 if your week involves real distance, one or two passengers most days, and a driver who would rather enjoy the road than tune it out. The 185 hp four is not quick, and roughly eight seconds to 100 km/h tells you to plan an overtake instead of demanding one, but the steering and the way the car settles at speed are a clear step above what this rate usually buys.

Book something else in three cases. If you are four tall adults every day, the rear headroom will irritate somebody by the second morning and a rival with a squarer roof is the better answer. If your days are spent hopping between older multi-storey car parks in the middle of town, a compact will save you time and patience. And if the plan touches sand, a graded track or a beach road, this is a low front-wheel-drive sedan with no business there, so rent a crossover with proper height under it and leave the 6 for the tarmac it is good on.
