Land Rover Range Rover Velar 2024 - start from 723 AED / day

If you want a Range Rover for the way it looks as much as the badge on the bonnet, the Velar 2024 is the one to rent in Dubai. We hand it over with pay-on-delivery, so you're not fronting a large charge just to reserve it. The Velar is the design-led member of the family, a midsize luxury SUV built around clean surfaces, flush door handles and a calm, uncluttered cabin. The version we run is the P300, a 2.0-litre turbo four making 300 horsepower through an eight-speed automatic and full-time all-wheel drive. Rent it for the look, the ride and the badge at a sensible rate. The honest catch is interior space, and this page is about deciding whether that trade suits your week.

Rear room and boot: read this first

Space is where the Velar asks you to compromise, so start here before the styling wins you over. The boot lists up to 673 litres, which sounds generous, but the load floor is styled rather than square, so it takes soft bags more happily than a stack of hard cases. Two large suitcases and a couple of cabin bags fit for an airport run. Add a third big case plus a pushchair and it's tight, and you'll be folding part of the rear bench.

Rear legroom is the bigger squeeze. The sloping roofline and raked glass cost headroom and knee space against boxier rivals like a BMW X3 or the larger Range Rover Sport. Two adults in the back are comfortable for a Marina-to-airport hop. Three across for a long day out is doable but not roomy. If your trips routinely carry four or five adults plus luggage, the Velar will feel snug and you should size up.

How the P300 drives

On paper it's quick, 0 to 100 km/h in 6.0 seconds and a 234 km/h top speed, but the character is comfort first. Throttle response is smooth rather than urgent, and the gearbox prefers easing up to speed over snapping through ratios. On Sheikh Zayed Road it cruises and overtakes without fuss and settles into a quiet lope at motorway speed. Push hard from a standstill and there's a half-beat of turbo lag before it wakes up. For most Dubai driving that suits the car. If you want a genuinely fast Range Rover, the P300 isn't the one to chase.

Staying cool in the heat

Cabin cooling matters here more than almost any spec, and a car parked in June sun turns into an oven. The Velar clears a hot cabin quickly once you're moving, helped by strong front vents and rear vents for back-seat passengers, which not every car in this bracket includes. The first couple of minutes are still warm while the system beats the heat soak, so crack the windows for a few seconds before you set off. Once it's cold, it holds temperature well even at 45 degrees with the sun on the glass.

Parking, speed bumps and where it fits

At just under 4.8 metres long and close to two metres wide at the mirrors, the Velar is a proper midsize SUV, not a small one. Standard mall multi-storey bays take it fine, but tighter older car parks and some Marina ramps ask for care on the mirrors. Forward visibility is good from the high seat, though the rear glass is shallow, so the camera and sensors earn their keep reversing.

Ground clearance is a healthy 213 mm, so speed bumps, raised mall ramps and the lips around residential compounds clear without scraping. That clearance and the all-wheel drive handle a firm desert track or a flat run toward Hatta without complaint. This isn't a dune car, though. The road-biased tyres and low front mean serious soft sand is a job for a hardcore 4x4, so keep the Velar to graded tracks and tarmac.

Fuel, range and running costs

Official combined economy sits under 8 litres per 100 km, but treat that as a lab figure. Real Dubai driving, short hops, heavy AC and stop-start traffic, pushes you nearer 10 to 12 in town. With the 63-litre tank that still gives a comfortable working range, so a normal week of city errands and a couple of longer runs means filling up roughly twice, not daily. It takes premium unleaded, worth knowing before your first stop. Salik tolls charge automatically as you pass, and both those tolls and any RTA fines from the trip are the renter's responsibility. Belts are mandatory front and back, and under-fours need a child seat.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the Velar 2024 if you're a couple or a small family who want a stylish, comfortable, genuinely good-looking SUV for a Dubai week, and the Range Rover badge matters to you. It rides beautifully, the cabin is a lovely place to sit out traffic, and it looks the part at any valet stand in the city.

Skip it if space is your priority. Four adults with full airport luggage, or anyone who needs a true third row, will be happier in a larger Range Rover or a roomier mainstream SUV. And if you want speed over serenity, the P300 is quick enough but tuned for calm, so look further up the range. For everyone else who values design and ride over outright practicality, the Velar is one of the easiest luxury SUVs to recommend.
