This generation was refreshed once, in the 2021 facelift, and Land Rover has kept the same P250 engine, the same single curved touchscreen and the same body since. A 2024 build date means a fresher production run, not a different car underneath. So the real question on this page isn't which year to pick. It's whether the Velar's shape and size suit a week in Dubai at all, and that's what the rest of this settles.

The P250 engine, and what's actually new for 2024

Nothing about the drivetrain has moved since the facelift. This car runs the 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder, badged P250, making 250 hp and 365 Nm through an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive, the same unit fitted to the 2021 and 2022 Velars already on this page. Zero to 100 km/h takes around 7.1 seconds, unhurried rather than quick, and the six-cylinder P340 and P400 that some price lists mention aren't part of this fleet car, so don't book expecting that extra shove. The all-wheel drive is set up for grip on wet tarmac and a graded track, not for low-range crawling, which matters if Hatta is on your list.

On the road it drives like every facelifted Velar does: composed rather than sporty. The steering is light and accurate at low speed, road noise stays low once you're cruising on Sheikh Zayed Road, and the ride handles Dubai's rougher patches better than the low roofline suggests. It won't hustle through a bend the way a Porsche Macan does, and nothing about the setup asks it to try.

Cabin room, boot space and everyday use

Five seats, no third row, on any Velar year. Two adults up front and two more in the back is what the cabin is built around, and the rear bench works fine for adults over a short run. The sloping roofline does eat into rear headroom compared with the boxier Range Rover Sport, so a tall passenger sitting behind a tall driver will notice their head sitting closer to the glass. The boot holds 673 litres with the seats up, good for one large case and a soft bag rather than a full family's luggage, and it opens to 1,731 litres with the rear seats folded for a supermarket run or extra bags picked up along the way. For a DXB or DWC pickup with two people and reasonable luggage, that's a clean fit. Add two more adults and a week's worth of suitcases and it gets tight fast, at which point the Range Rover Sport is the better call.

Fuel, Dubai heat and life in the cabin

The 82-litre tank takes premium fuel, and Land Rover's combined figure for the P250 sits close to 9 L/100km. Expect noticeably more in real Dubai traffic, closer to 11 or 12 L/100km once air conditioning and stop-start roads are in the mix, so plan around that number rather than the brochure one. Leave the Velar parked at 45 degrees plus for an afternoon and the cabin cools down fast once you're moving. The front vents pull the worst of the heat out within a couple of minutes, and rear passengers get their own vents too, so nobody in the back is waiting on the front seats to catch up. The large glass area that makes the cabin feel open in cooler months works against you in August, since more glass means more heat load than a smaller-windowed SUV carries, so a shaded or covered bay gives the AC a head start worth having. Ground clearance sits at 213 mm, enough for speed bumps and mall ramps without a second thought, but this isn't a car built for graded desert tracks, and nothing about how it's tuned suggests otherwise.

Who should book this Velar, and who shouldn't

Book this one if arriving well matters as much as the drive itself: a design-led Range Rover for hotel valets, dinner reservations and a week of city and highway driving with one other person and light bags. It stays quiet at speed, it photographs well outside a Marina tower, and being the newest example in the fleet, it's simply in fresher condition than the older cars covering the same brief, not a mechanically different one.

Look elsewhere in two cases. Travelling as a family with real luggage, or needing more rear shoulder room, points you toward the Range Rover Sport or the full-size Range Rover, which carry the same presence with more space to spare. Wanting Hatta, desert tracks or serious ground clearance points you away from any Velar, facelifted or not. As a premium SUV it rents against a refundable deposit confirmed at booking, so this isn't a no-deposit car.
