Under the bonnet sits a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 making 575 hp and 700 Nm, sent through an eight-speed automatic to all four wheels via a permanent all-wheel-drive system. Zero to 100 km/h takes 4.5 seconds, which is genuinely quick for a two-and-a-half-tonne SUV and enough to catch most sports saloons off guard from a standstill. Land Rover quotes a limited top speed of up to 283 km/h. You'll never see that number in Dubai traffic, and you shouldn't try, but the margin is what makes a highway overtake at 140 feel effortless instead of committed.

The chassis is where the SVR earns its badge, and where the compromise shows. Firmer adaptive dampers and a quicker steering rack cut body lean through a roundabout and make the car change direction with more urgency than its height suggests it should. The flip side is that the same firmness carries into everyday driving. Expansion joints and rougher patches of road come through with more of a thump than the standard Sport allows, and the SVR never fully settles into the wafting ride that's the usual Range Rover signature. It's still supple by SUV standards, just noticeably less so than its own siblings.

Space, boot and living with it day to day

Five seats, no more. The SVR skips the optional third row some Sport trims offer, and the heavily bolstered rear bench makes the middle position tight for anything but a child, so plan on four adults with room to spare rather than a genuine five-up airport run. The boot is the honest catch. At 489 litres it trails the standard Sport's by a wide margin, because the extra bracing and the subwoofer for the upgraded stereo eat into the floor. One large case and a soft bag fit cleanly. Add a third case, or golf clubs, and you're folding a rear seat to make it work.

Parking asks for the same care as any Range Rover Sport. At just under 4.9 metres long and close to two metres wide across the body, it fills a Marina tower ramp or a tight mall bay the way its siblings do, and the SVR's lower front splitter sits a shade closer to the ground than the badge implies. Air suspension keeps ground clearance up to 278 mm when it's needed, so speed bumps and steep entrance ramps aren't a worry, but this isn't the Sport to point at a graded desert track. Running costs and the cabin in Dubai heat

A supercharged V8 doesn't do quiet fuel bills, and the SVR doesn't pretend otherwise. The official combined figure is 12.8 L/100km from a 105-litre tank, already thirstier than the six-cylinder Sport, and a week of Dubai traffic with the air conditioning working and a heavy right foot will push real consumption past that on paper number. Budget for more stops at the pump than the spec sheet suggests, and for premium fuel only. Your mileage allowance on this car is 250 km a day, then AED 0.5 for every kilometre over that, and you'll need to be 25 to take the keys, a higher bar than most of our fleet.

The cabin cools properly once you're moving. It heats up fast after a few hours parked under the sun, and pulling a mid-40s interior back to comfortable takes the climate system a real minute or two rather than an instant fix, but it gets there evenly across front and rear rather than blasting the front seats and leaving guests in the back to wait. Cooled front seats take the edge off hot leather the moment you climb back in. Park in shade or a basement level where you can, and that first stretch is shorter again.

Who this SVR suits, and who should look elsewhere

Rent the Range Rover Sport SVR 2022 if the drive is the reason for the booking: a weekend of early highway runs, a car that sounds like an occasion every time it starts, or simply wanting the quickest Range Rover in Dubai for a few days. Nothing else in the family delivers that particular thrill as directly.

Look elsewhere if comfort, boot space or running cost matter more than pace. A standard Range Rover Sport rides softer, carries more luggage and drinks less, for a lower rate. And if the trip is really about four adults, full airport luggage and the calmest possible cruise, the full-size Range Rover does that better than any Sport, SVR included.
