What sets it apart from the regular Sport isn't just the number on the spec sheet. The SVR gets firmer adaptive dampers and a quicker steering rack, so it leans less through a roundabout and changes direction with more urgency than a car this tall has any right to. It's still a two-and-a-half-tonne SUV, and it still rides on air suspension, so it never turns genuinely sharp. What it does is make the drive itself the point, in a way the diesel and six-cylinder Range Rovers in our fleet don't try to.

Space, boot and the daily use

Five seats, and that's genuinely all you get. The SVR's heavily bolstered rear seats look the part but they also kill the middle position for anyone but a child, so treat it as a four-adult car with a seat to spare, not a proper five-up airport run. The boot is the honest catch. At 489 litres it's noticeably smaller than the standard Range Rover Sport's, because the SVR's extra bracing and a subwoofer for the upgraded stereo eat into the floor. One large case and a carry-on fit without a fight. A third bag, or golf clubs alongside luggage, means folding a rear seat.

Parking is where the size actually shows. At just under 4.9 metres long and pushing two metres wide across the body, it wants the same care in a Marina tower ramp or tight mall bay as any Range Rover Sport, and the sportier front and rear bumpers sit a little closer to the ground than you'd guess from the badge. Air suspension keeps ground clearance up to 278 mm when you need it, so speed bumps and steep entrance ramps aren't a concern, but this isn't the car for a graded desert track. The cabin itself cools well. It's a big glasshouse that heats up fast after a few hours parked in the sun, and pulling a mid-40s interior back down takes the climate system a genuine minute or two of real effort rather than an instant fix, but it gets there without straining and cools the back seats evenly rather than just blasting the front. Cooled front seats take the sting out of hot leather the moment you climb back in. Park in shade or a basement level where you can, and the whole process is quicker.
