The engine, and how it drives

Under the bonnet is the P360, Land Rover's 3.0-litre mild-hybrid inline six making 355 hp and 500 Nm, sent through an eight-speed automatic to all four wheels. Zero to 100 km/h takes about six seconds, quick enough to clear a gap on Sheikh Zayed Road without a run-up, but this is the entry petrol, not a car built to chase a stopwatch. If outright drama is the point of the booking, that's what the supercharged V8 SVR is for, not this one.

What the new generation actually changes is how the car settles into a corner and how quiet it stays doing it. The platform underneath is new, and it shows in how flat the car sits through a fast sweeper and how little road noise reaches the cabin at 120 km/h. It's the same recipe as the old Sport, just tightened up.

Space, the boot and daily use

Five seats, no third row, this Sport never pretends to be a family hauler beyond four adults and a fifth passenger for a short hop. Rear-seat space is generous for two adults on an airport run, and the boot holds 835 litres behind the rear seats, big enough for a full set of cases without folding anything, and up to around 1,860 litres with the rear seats down for a supermarket run or extra gear.

Size is the trade you make for the presence. At 4,946 mm long and just over two metres wide across the body, this generation is larger than the Sport it replaced, so a tight Marina ramp or a narrow multi-storey bay asks for the same care, maybe a touch more. The upside is ground clearance: air suspension lifts the car to around 278 mm when you need it, so speed bumps and steep mall ramps are non-events. It's genuinely capable further off the tarmac too, but rent this one for the road, not for a Hatta run. That's a job for a dedicated 4x4. A black cabin, fuel and running cost

This one is finished in black, inside a cabin that's mostly glass by SUV standards. Your allowance is 250 km a day, then AED 0.5 for every extra kilometre after that, and you'll need to be 25 to take the keys, a step up from the entry-level cars on our fleet.

Who should rent it, and who should look elsewhere
