Of the Range Rovers we rent, the Sport is the one that actually wants to be driven. We hand over the Range Rover Sport 2022 across Dubai in one to two hours, no-deposit option included, and the reason to pick it over its bigger sibling is the way it handles. It carries the luxury and the presence, but it sits lower, steers with more bite, and feels keener to change direction than a two-and-a-half-tonne SUV has any right to. If you want a big, comfortable car that still rewards you on Sheikh Zayed Road and a clear mountain road up to Hatta, this is the choice. The trade-offs are fuel and footprint, and those are below.

How it drives, and why that's the point

The Sport's character is in the chassis. The supercharged 3.0-litre V6 makes 340 hp and gets it to 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds, but the number that matters is how it feels between corners. Body roll is tied down, the steering is quicker than the full-size car's, and on a flowing road it shrinks around you in a way the big Range Rover never does. Overtaking on the E11 is effortless, the engine pulling hard from the mid-range with the supercharger filling in low down.

It's still a Range Rover, so the ride stays cosseting and the cabin stays quiet. You get the commanding view and the luxury, with a sharper edge when you ask for it. For a driver who'd rather be behind the wheel than in the back, that balance is the whole appeal.

Cabin, seats and luggage

Inside it's a five-seater with deep, supportive front chairs and rear vents so back-seat passengers cool at the same pace. Two adults in the back are comfortable, and the boot at roughly 780 litres swallows several large cases with the floor flat. Fold the rear seats and there's far more for a bigger move. For airport runs to DXB or DWC with real luggage, it loads as easily as you'd hope from a car this size.

Heat, parking and Dubai roads

A dark car parked in July sun gets brutally hot, and the first two or three minutes inside are unpleasant whatever you drive here. After that the climate system pulls the cabin down fast and holds it cold, with the rear vents keeping passengers behind comfortable.

On size, be realistic. Just under five metres long and two metres wide, the Sport fills a standard bay and wants care on tight Marina ramps, though it's a touch easier to place than the full-size car. The 360 camera and sensors help, and the air suspension glides over speed bumps that scrape lower cars. On the open road it's in its element, settled at the limit and quick to respond.

What it costs to run, and the desert

The supercharged V6 is thirsty. In stop-and-go traffic expect somewhere around 13 to 16 l/100km, easing on a steady cruise but never frugal. The 105-litre tank gives a long working range, so you're realistically filling once or twice in a week rather than constantly. Use premium.

Capability is real, not cosmetic. With all-wheel drive, raisable air suspension and 850 mm of wading depth, the Sport handles graded desert tracks and the routes toward Hatta without drama, and the extra clearance keeps the underbody clear of ruts. You won't go dune-bashing in a rental, and you shouldn't, but for desert resorts and rough access roads it's genuinely able. Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the Range Rover Sport 2022 if you want the Range Rover luxury and presence but care how the car drives: the keener steering, the lower stance, the punch of the supercharged V6 on the highway. For a driver who'll spend the week up front, it's the most engaging car in the family.

If your priority is the quietest rear seat for chauffeured runs, the full-size Range Rover does that better. If it's easy city parking and lower fuel bills, the Evoque or a smaller luxury SUV makes more sense. But for the blend of comfort and a real driver's edge, the Sport is the one to book.
