A Range Rover Sport 2021 is the value pick in Dubai's luxury-SUV rack. You get most of what the current car projects, the presence, the air-suspended ride, the real all-road ability, for a good deal less per day, and we bring it to your hotel, villa or terminal usually within one to two hours of booking. This one is the second-generation L494 in black, running the 3.0-litre 340 hp petrol. It is the road-biased Range Rover, quick enough without pretending to be a rocket. What you're actually renting

This is the second-generation Range Rover Sport, the L494, not the sharper new model. The version on rent runs the 3.0-litre petrol with 340 hp through an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive. It reaches 100 km/h in 7.2 seconds, properly quick for a car this size without pretending to be the supercharged SVR. Nobody rents this to race.

What you pay for is the way it moves. Air suspension soaks up patched tarmac and expansion joints, the cabin stays hushed at 120 km/h, and there's enough mid-range to finish an overtake on Sheikh Zayed Road in one clean move. Against the current Sport, you give up the latest cabin tech and a bit of polish. You keep the shape everyone reads as a Range Rover, and you pay less for the week. That trade is the whole reason to book this one.

Room, boot and living with its size

Five seats, and the back row is where the money shows. Two adults stretch out on an airport run, and headroom stays generous even for tall passengers. The boot holds 780 litres behind the rear seats and opens to 1,761 with them folded, so a DXB or DWC pickup with three or four large cases plus soft bags loads flat without a fight.

Size is the trade. At 4,879 mm long and just under two metres wide across the body, the Sport is easier to place than the full-size Range Rover, but it still wants a moment in a tight Marina bay or a narrow multi-storey. Fold the mirrors and take your time. The upside is height. Air suspension lifts ground clearance to around 278 mm, so speed bumps, steep mall ramps and a graded track to a desert villa are non-events. A rented Sport is a road car and should stay on the road, but that clearance means nothing scrapes and nothing catches. Heat and the cabin

A cabin this size takes a little longer to pull down from a 48-degree July car park than a small hatch, simply because there's more air to move. The climate system is strong and gets there without drama, and it cools evenly rather than blasting the front and forgetting the back. Rear passengers get their own vents, so guests settle within a minute or two of setting off. On the worst days, when the car has baked in an open lot, cooled front seats take the sting out of hot leather. Park in shade or a basement where you can and the pull-down is quicker again.

Who should rent it, and who should size elsewhere

Rent the Range Rover Sport 2021 if you want the Range Rover look and the air-suspended comfort without paying current-model money, and if long highway miles with passengers and luggage are your week. For the rate, it's one of the calmer, more capable ways to spend a week on Dubai roads.

Spend up to the newer Sport or the full-size Range Rover if the latest cabin, the quietest possible ride, or maximum rear presence is the point of the booking. Look at a smaller SUV if most of your driving is threading tight towers and you'd rather not manage two metres of width. Go in with the terms clear. As a luxury SUV this rents against a refundable deposit confirmed at booking, so it isn't a no-deposit car. Your allowance is 250 km a day, then AED 0.5 for each extra kilometre, you need to be 21 to take the keys, and the petrol six drinks premium, so budget for fills on a week of city driving.
