Land Rover Range Rover Sport 2020 - start from 501 AED / day

We rent the Range Rover Sport 2020 in Dubai with 250 km included every day and extra kilometres at just 2 AED, which is genuinely useful in a luxury SUV most people want to point at Hatta or Abu Dhabi for the weekend. Delivery lands at your door in one to two hours. This is the 3.0-litre six-cylinder car making 340 hp, the sensible engine in the range rather than the headline V8. The argument here is simple. For most renters the six is the Sport to take, because it carries the same cabin, the same air suspension and the same off-road ability while costing far less to keep fuelled across a long week.

The engine most people should rent

The 340 hp six pulls cleanly and feels quick enough for anything Dubai asks. It settles into a relaxed cruise on Sheikh Zayed Road, and an overtake at 120 takes a firm press rather than a downshift drama. You're not buying the savage launch of the supercharged V8, and you won't miss it on the daily run. What you keep is the part that matters: the cabin that feels a clear step above a mainstream SUV, the composed ride on air springs, and a car that shrinks around you at speed. For a renter who wants the Range Rover feel without the V8's fuel habit, this is the honest choice.

Fuel, range and the mileage that comes with it

This is where the six earns its keep against the V8. Expect roughly 11 to 13 litres per 100 km in Dubai's mix of crawling traffic and highway sprints, noticeably less than the supercharged cars in the same body. The 105-litre tank is large, so a full fill covers a comfortable week of city driving plus an airport run or two before you're back at the pump. Paired with the 2 AED extra-kilometre rate, that makes this the Sport to book if your plans run beyond the city limits and you'd rather not watch the fuel gauge the whole way.

Luggage and people

Five seats, and a boot that genuinely takes a week of bags. Two large suitcases stand with room for soft bags around them, which covers a family flying into DXB or DWC with full cases. Fold the rear bench and it turns into a flat load bay for a flat-pack run or sports kit. There's no third row, so if you regularly carry six or seven this isn't your car and a longer SUV makes more sense. For four adults plus airport luggage, the Sport has space to spare and the comfort to make a day trip painless.

Heat and the first few minutes

Leave it under the July sun and the cabin will be brutal when you open the door, the same as any car here. What counts is recovery, and the Sport's climate system pulls a 45-degree cabin down to something civil within a few minutes of moving. There are rear vents, so passengers in the back aren't waiting on cold air that never arrives, and cooled seats where the car has them take the sting out of hot leather. Crack the windows for the first half-minute and you'll cut the worst before the AC even catches up.

Parking, ramps and the desert option

This is a wide, long SUV, and Dubai's older multi-storey bays weren't drawn with it in mind. In Marina towers and tighter mall basements you'll use the camera suite and most of the bay, though the turning circle is better than the footprint suggests. The payoff is the air suspension: mall ramps and aggressive speed bumps that scrape a lowered car are a non-issue, and you can raise the ride height with a button. For real desert work, full all-wheel drive, up to 278 mm of clearance and an 850 mm wading depth put a Hatta trail or soft sand well within reach. Air the tyres down, pick the sand mode, and it does what far pricier hardware does. It's heavy, so very soft dunes still want a driver who knows the terrain. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during your rental pass to you, and under-fours need a child seat we can fit on request.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the Range Rover Sport 2020 if you want the luxury, the cabin and the genuine off-road ability of a Sport without paying V8 fuel prices for it, especially if your week includes longer drives where the mileage and the tank matter. It's the all-rounder of the range.

Skip the six if outright pace is the point, in which case the supercharged V8 Sport is the one you actually want. Skip the Sport entirely if you need six or seven seats, where a three-row SUV fits better, or if your week is short city hops in cramped parking, where a smaller crossover is simply easier to live with. For most renters, though, this is the version that makes the most sense.
