It's whether you need the full-size car at all, or whether a Range Rover Sport would cover the same week in a smaller footprint. What you're actually renting

This is the flagship Land Rover, the L460 generation, and the version on rent runs the 3.0-litre inline-six mild-hybrid petrol: 400 hp, an eight-speed automatic, and all-wheel drive with rear-wheel steering. It's the sensible engine, not the V8, and for Dubai it's the right one. The car reaches 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds, but speed isn't the reason anyone books this. The reason is how it delivers it, in one smooth, near-silent push with no drama.

Where it sits matters more than the numbers. A Range Rover Sport is the same idea in a tighter, keener body that's easier to place in a tower car park. A Rolls-Royce Cullinan is the step up if the back seat is where you plan to spend your time. This full-size Range Rover lands between them, with more presence and rear room than the Sport and far less flash than the Cullinan.

Space, seats and refinement

Five seats, and this is the standard wheelbase, so there's no third row on the car you'll get. The long-wheelbase version offers an optional seven, but that isn't this rental. What you're paying for is the rear bench. Legroom back there is generous enough that two adults stretch out on a long airport run, and the cabin stays hushed at highway speed in a way almost nothing else in this money does as well.

The boot holds 818 litres behind the rear seats and opens to 1,841 with them folded. For a DXB or DWC pickup that's three or four large cases plus soft bags loaded flat, no wrestling. If your week involves people and luggage as much as the arrival itself, the space is there without asking.

On Dubai roads and in the heat

Sheikh Zayed Road is where this car makes the most sense. The mild-hybrid six has enough mid-range to complete an overtake in one move, and at 120 km/h it's barely working. The air suspension smooths out patched tarmac and expansion joints that make firmer SUVs jitter, so a long cruise to Abu Dhabi or Hatta stays calm.

On the heat, a cabin this size takes a moment longer to pull down from a 48-degree July car park than a small hatch would, but the climate system is strong and the rear passengers get their own vents rather than waiting on the front. Cooled seats help on the worst days. It copes.

The clearance is real. Air suspension lifts the body to around 295 mm and the car will wade to 900 mm, which is proper off-road ability. Nobody dune-bashes a rented Range Rover, and you shouldn't either, but that height means mall ramps, high speed bumps and the odd graded track near a desert villa are non-events. The trade is size. This is over five metres long and just over two metres wide across the body, so a tight Marina bay or a narrow multi-storey needs patience and folded mirrors. The rear-wheel steering shrinks the turning circle and helps more than you'd expect on a U-turn. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during your rental are yours to cover, as on any car here.

Who should take it, and who shouldn't

Rent this Range Rover if you want to arrive quietly and comfortably, if the rear seat and the presence carry weight, or if you're covering long highway miles with passengers and luggage in tow. It's one of the calmest, most complete ways to spend a week on Dubai roads.

Size down to a Sport if most of your driving is threading tight car parks and you'd rather have something a touch smaller and sharper. Step up to a Cullinan if the back seat is the entire point of the booking. And go in with the running costs clear: the 90-litre tank takes premium fuel, real consumption in city traffic runs well above the 9.7 L/100km combined figure, so budget for fills. As a luxury rental it does take a deposit, so don't expect the no-deposit option here. Your allowance is 250 km a day, then AED 0.5 for each extra kilometre, and you need to be 25 to take the keys.
