Most rental desks in Dubai want you at 25 before they will hand you the keys to a full-size Range Rover, and some ask for 30. We do not. The Land Rover Range Rover 2023 rents here from age 21, the same floor we set on far smaller cars, which is unusual for a flagship this size and this expensive to insure. The engine, and how it drives

This is the standard-wheelbase L460, and the car on rent runs the 3.0-litre mild-hybrid inline-six badged P400: 400 hp, 550 Nm, an eight-speed automatic and all-wheel drive with rear-wheel steering. Land Rover also builds a 4.4-litre V8 further up the range, but this six is the one that makes sense for daily driving here, and it gets to 100 km/h in 5.8 seconds without ever sounding like it is trying. What you notice from the driver's seat is how little drama there is in the way it delivers that power, whether you are pulling away from a valet stand or merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road.

The rear-wheel steering matters more than the spec sheet suggests. It tightens the turning circle at low speed, so a U-turn or a tight ramp into a multi-storey car park feels far less like piloting a five-metre car than the dimensions promise. That size is still real, and a first-time driver in this car, at 21 or 41, should treat the first day gently around Marina towers and mall basements until the width becomes second nature. Air suspension lifts the body toward 295 mm when the road asks for it, which turns steep ramps and taller speed bumps into non-events rather than things you creep over.

Space, boot and the daily use

Five seats, standard wheelbase, no third row on this car. Land Rover sells a long-wheelbase version with an optional seven, but that is a different rental, and for most bookings here the five-seat layout is what actually gets used. The rear bench is where the space goes. Two adults sit behind two tall front passengers with real legroom, on seats built for a long drive rather than a quick errand, and the cabin stays quiet enough at highway speed that a phone call from the back is easy.

The boot takes 818 litres behind the rear seats and opens to 1,841 with them folded flat. That is three or four large cases loaded without rearranging, plus soft bags, which covers most airport pickups and a week of hotel-to-hotel moves. Fold the seats for a bigger single load, a golf trip or a furniture run from a showroom, and the space is there without needing to strap anything to a roof.

Running cost, heat and the cabin

The 90-litre tank and a combined WLTP figure of 9.7 L/100km point to a long range on paper, but city driving with the AC working hard pushes real consumption above that number, and this engine wants premium fuel. Budget for more stops than the combined figure implies, especially if most of your week is short hops rather than steady highway miles. Salik tolls during your rental are yours to cover, and so is any RTA fine issued while you hold the keys.

On heat, a cabin this size takes a little longer to pull down from a parked, sun-baked afternoon than a small hatch would, simply because there is more air and more glass to cool. Once the system catches up it is strong, and rear passengers get their own vents rather than living off what drifts back from the front, so anyone you collect from a lobby is comfortable within a couple of minutes of pulling away. Cooled front seats take the worst of the sting out of leather that has been sitting in an open lot. As a luxury rental this one takes a refundable deposit, so it is not a no-deposit booking, and that is worth planning for regardless of the age on your licence.

Who should rent it, and who should look elsewhere

Rent this Range Rover if you want the flagship experience, the rear-seat room and the quiet highway manners, and you are comfortable placing a large car in Dubai traffic and parking. The lower age floor makes it genuinely bookable for a 21-year-old where most competitors would turn you away regardless of how you drive, but the car itself does not get any easier to park or any cheaper to run because you are younger. Treat the first outing carefully, the same way any driver new to this footprint should.

If most of your week is tight car parks and short hops, a Range Rover Sport covers similar ground in a smaller, easier body. If the back seat and the entrance are the entire point of the booking, a Rolls-Royce Cullinan sits above this car for a reason, and you likely will not be driving yourself anyway. This Range Rover sits between the two: more presence and rear room than the Sport, far less spectacle than the Cullinan.
