We rent the Land Rover Discovery 2020 in Dubai with no deposit, which is rare for a full-size luxury SUV at this level. This is the seven-seat Discovery, a 3.0-litre, 249hp diesel with permanent four-wheel drive, and it's one of the few cars we hand over that genuinely does two jobs at once: it carries a family of seven with luggage, and it can leave the tarmac for Hatta or a desert track without drama. So the question this page answers is simple. Is the Discovery the right rental for your week, or are you paying for capability you won't use? We'll be honest about both sides.
Rent the Discovery if you're moving real people and real luggage, and at least once that week you plan to be somewhere a sedan can't follow. Six or seven of you heading to a desert camp, a Hatta day, a wadi drive, or a beach with soft sand near the end. That's where the money makes sense.
If you're two adults doing Marina dinners, mall runs and the odd airport collection, this is more car than you need. A Discovery is wide, thirsty and expensive to run compared with a mid-size SUV, and you'll feel all three in Dubai's underground car parks. For that trip, a smaller SUV or a sedan does the job for less. Pick the Discovery when the size and the off-road hardware are the point, not a bonus you'll never touch.

Seven seats, but read the rows honestly. The first two rows are full adult space, head and knee room to spare even for tall passengers. The third row is real, not a token bench, and adults can sit back there for a Hatta run or an airport drop. For long highway hours, it's better suited to kids.
Luggage is where you decide which seats to use. With all seven seats up, the boot is genuinely small, around 172 litres, enough for a couple of soft bags and the weekly shop, not airport cases. Drop the third row and you free up a big, square load bay that swallows several large suitcases and a buggy. The split-fold lets you run six up with full luggage, or five up with cavernous space. The electric air suspension also drops the body when you park, which makes loading and lifting kids in and out easier than the height suggests.
Dubai summers sit in the high 40s, and a parked Discovery bakes like anything else. The good news is the cabin is large and the climate system has the muscle to cope. Vents reach all three rows, so the kids in the back actually get cold air rather than leftovers, which matters on a July school run. From a heat-soaked start, give it a few minutes with the fans up before it's properly comfortable across all seven seats. Park in shade where you can. A cabin this size takes longer to pull down than a small hatch, but once it's cold, it stays cold.
On Sheikh Zayed Road and the E11, the Discovery is in its element. The diesel pulls strongly from low revs, overtaking at 120 is effortless, and the air suspension keeps it calm and quiet on long airport runs to DXB or DWC. It's a relaxed motorway cruiser, not a sharp one, and that suits the roads here.
The size is the catch in town. At over two metres wide with the mirrors out and nearly five metres long, tight multi-storey bays and narrow Marina ramps need care, and some older car parks will have you folding the mirrors and taking U-turns slowly. The high seating helps over speed bumps, and at standard ride height there's plenty of clearance for mall ramps and kerbs.
Off tarmac is the real reason to take this car. Raise the air suspension to its full 283mm of clearance, and the Terrain Response system has modes for sand, gravel and rock, with low range for serious work. The 900mm wading depth means a flooded underpass after rare rain, or a wadi crossing, isn't a problem. For Hatta trails and dune edges, this is one of the most capable rentals we hand out, and it does it without ever feeling agricultural.
The diesel is the Discovery's saving grace on cost. Expect roughly 9 to 10 litres per 100km in mixed Dubai driving, more in city stop-start, less on a steady highway run. With the 85-litre tank, that's a long way between fills, often a full week of normal use before you're back at the pump, and a tank of diesel still costs less than petrol equivalents this size. For a vehicle this big, that range is a genuine plus on a longer trip.
A few Dubai rules to keep in mind. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental pass to you, the renter. Seat belts are mandatory in all seven seats, and children under four need a proper child seat, which is worth sorting before a long drive with the third row in use.
The Land Rover Discovery 2020 is the rental to take when your week genuinely needs both seven seats and off-road ability. Big family, real luggage once you drop the third row, and a desert or Hatta day on the plan. For that brief, nothing in this class does it more comfortably, and the no-deposit booking with doorstep delivery in one to two hours makes it easy to put on your driveway. If you're staying on tarmac with a smaller group, size down and save the running cost. Book the Discovery when its size and capability are the reason you want it, not extras you'll leave unused.
