Book a morning in Hatta and a Monday school run in the same week, and the Land Rover Defender 2025 covers both without an asterisk. We hand it over at your door in Dubai in one to two hours, keys and paperwork sorted on your driveway. This is one of the very few rentals in the city that will actually climb a rock step or cross soft sand, then sit calmly in Sheikh Zayed Road traffic the next morning. The version here is the supercharged V8, so this page is really about one question: whether that much engine and that much car is what your week needs, or more than it needs.

What the V8 Defender actually does

Most SUVs you can rent in Dubai look capable and aren't. This one is the real thing. The air suspension lifts it to 291mm at off-road height, wading depth is rated at 900mm, and full-time all-wheel drive with the terrain modes means a graded track to a Hatta viewpoint or a run onto firm sand near the edge of the dunes is well within its comfort zone. Air it down, pick the right mode, and it just goes.

Two honest caveats. It's a heavy, expensive car, so soft deep dune bashing is still a job for someone who knows what they're doing and has a recovery plan, not a first-timer's afternoon. And the capability is wasted if all you drive is tarmac.

On the road the 525hp V8 is the party trick. It pulls hard from any speed, overtakes on the E11 with a shove and a lovely bassy noise, and cruises at 120 like it's idling. It's genuinely quick for something this size, 0 to 100 in 5.4 seconds, but you rent it for the way it shrugs off distance, not for lap times.

Seven seats, boot and the family or desert week

The seven-seat layout is five proper seats plus a pair of occasional ones in the back. Those third-row seats are fine for kids on a mall run or a short hop to the beach. Two adults back there for a full day to the East Coast will not thank you, so treat them as the school-run overflow they are.

Boot space is the trade-off nobody explains at booking. Fold the rear jump seats and you get a real load bay, roughly 780 litres to the window line, which swallows a family of four's luggage plus a cooler and camping soft bags without a fight. Raise the third row and that space mostly vanishes. Seven passengers and a full week's cases don't happen at the same time, so plan for one or the other.

For the classic Dubai desert weekend, though, it's ideal: five people, tents and cool boxes in the back, and the clearance to reach the campsite the sedans turn back from.

Fuel, heat and running it

A supercharged V8 is thirsty, and no amount of gentle driving changes that. The official combined figure is around 12.7 L/100km, but in stop-start city traffic and with the throttle you'll actually use, expect noticeably more. The 90-litre tank still gives good range, and realistically you'll fill up every 400 to 500km of mixed Dubai driving. If the fuel bill worries you, this is your sign to read the last section.

The cabin copes well with a Dubai August. It's a big volume of air to cool, so after a few hours parked in the sun it takes a minute or two to feel right, but the vents are strong and there are proper rear outlets for the second row, so the kids in the back aren't left roasting. Get in, start it, let it run for a moment before you load everyone.

Size is the daily reality check. At nearly 4.8 metres it's long and wide, and tight Marina multi-storey bays and some older mall ramps ask for care. The upside is a commanding view, a full camera suite and sensors, and enough clearance that speed bumps and steep ramp lips are non-events. Salik tolls and any RTA fines are on the renter, standard for every rental here, and child seats are required for under-fours.

Who should rent it, and who's over-buying

Rent the Defender V8 if you want the capability and the muscle and will use them: a real Hatta or desert weekend, a group that wants presence and pace, or a driver who simply enjoys a fast, characterful V8 and doesn't mind feeding it. On that brief it's brilliant and there's little else in the class that does the whole job.

If you mainly need a big, comfortable family SUV for tarmac, school runs, and airport pickups, you're over-buying here. A diesel or six-cylinder Defender, or a large sedan, does that week for a lot less fuel and a smaller deposit.
