What's under the bonnet, and what it can do

Under that shorter bonnet sits the full engine from the bigger car: a 5.0-litre supercharged V8 making 525 hp, paired with an eight-speed automatic and full-time all-wheel drive. It gets to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds and pulls to a limited 240 km/h, numbers few rentals in this city can match. On paper that's quick for something this shape, but what matters more for Dubai driving is how it delivers the power: strong from idle, with no lag to plan around when you need to close a gap on Sheikh Zayed Road.

The off-road side is real, not marketing gloss. Air suspension lifts the body to around 291mm at its off-road setting, the car wades through 900mm of water, and the shorter wheelbase gives it steeper approach and departure angles than the four-door Defender, which helps on the rutted, rocky sections near Hatta that catch out longer SUVs. Pick the right terrain mode, air the tyres down, and it climbs. The trade is the one every V8 makes: this is a heavy, expensive car, so deep dune work is a job for someone who already reads sand and carries recovery gear, not a first attempt.

Five seats, two doors, and the family-or-adventure math

There's no seven-seat option on this body. What you get is five seats and three doors, which means reaching the back involves tipping or sliding the front seat forward, not swinging open a rear door. That's a minor hassle for two adults and a couple of friends heading out for the day. It's a real one if you're wrestling a child seat into position more than once a trip.

The boot holds about 297 litres behind the rear seats, roughly enough for two soft weekend bags and a cooler, not a family's worth of suitcases. Fold the rear seats down and that grows to 1,263 litres, useful if you're hauling gear rather than people. Think of this as a car for two, or two plus a couple of light-packing friends, headed to a desert camp or a Hatta morning, not a five-seat family hauler for a week of mall runs and airport pickups. If you need four adults and their cases together, the longer four-door Defender does that job properly and this one doesn't.

Fuel, heat and running it

A supercharged V8 in a shorter, lighter body is still a supercharged V8. The official combined figure is around 14.6 L/100km, and city traffic with any enthusiasm on the throttle pushes that higher. The 90-litre tank is rated for roughly 600km, but plan on refuelling closer to every 400 to 450km once real Dubai driving and a constantly running AC are in the mix.

That smaller cabin is where the compact body pays you back. There's less air to cool than in the four-door, so after a few hours parked in the sun it pulls down to comfortable faster, and the front vents are strong enough to notice within a minute of starting the engine. Give it that minute before you load anyone in. The shorter length and tighter turning circle also make Marina and mall multi-storey ramps easier to place than the bigger Defender, and the ground clearance means speed bumps and steep ramp lips aren't something you think about. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are on you, as with any car here, and under-fours need a proper child seat, which is worth planning for given the two-door access.

Who should rent it, and who's over-buying

Rent this Defender if the two-door V8 is the point: a couple, or a small group who want real off-road ability and a car that turns heads, and who don't need to carry more than a couple of bags between them. On a Hatta weekend or a desert morning with one other couple, it's a genuinely good time and easy to park once you're back in the city.

Skip it if you need seats and luggage space for a family or a group of four. Look at the four-door Defender instead: it carries the same V8 without the seating compromise.
