It runs the same supercharged engine as the shorter three-door version and the seven-seat long-body model, but in a shape built around real rear access and a usable boot rather than an occasional third row you would rarely fill. What's under the bonnet, and what it can do

Every V8 Defender in the fleet, short body or long, runs the same 5.0-litre supercharged unit, and this five-door car is no exception: 525 hp through an eight-speed automatic and full-time all-wheel drive. It gets to 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds and pulls to a limited 240 km/h, quick for something this shape and this heavy. The off-road side is not for show. Air suspension raises the body to around 291 mm at its off-road height, it wades through 900 mm of water, and full-time all-wheel drive with the terrain modes handles a graded track to Hatta or firm sand at the edge of the dunes without drama. Air the tyres down, pick the right mode, and it gets on with it. Two honest caveats stand though: this is a heavy, expensive car, so soft, deep dune work still wants someone who knows what they are doing and carries recovery gear, and none of that capability matters if your week never leaves the tarmac.

Five doors, five seats, and a real boot

This body does not have a third row, worth saying plainly before you book: it seats five, not seven. What it gives you instead is a proper door on each side of the back seat, so buckling a child seat or helping grandparents in does not mean tipping the front seat forward and climbing past it, the way you would in the shorter three-door Defender. For a family loading kids, bags and a cooler on a Hatta morning, that alone changes how much you dread the packing part of the trip.

The cabin is the good news in August. It is a proper amount of air to cool after the car has sat in the sun, so give it a minute after you climb back in before you expect it cold, but the front vents are strong and pull the temperature down quickly once the AC gets going. At just over five metres long and two metres wide, this is not a car you thread into a tight bay without thinking. Fold the mirrors for narrow Marina and mall multi-storey ramps, and let the ground clearance handle speed bumps and steep ramp lips, both non-events at this height. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are yours to cover, as with any car here, and under-fours need a proper child seat, easier to fit now that you are not climbing past a folded front seat to do it.

Who should rent it, and who's over-buying

Rent this Defender if you are a family of four or five, or a small group, who want real rear-door access, a genuine boot and Hatta-and-back capability without carrying a third row you will rarely use. It is the practical five-seat V8 Defender, roomier and easier to live with than the two-door short body, and simpler to pack for than the seven-seat version once you factor in how much boot space that third row eats when it is up.

Size down to the three-door Defender if it is really just two adults and light bags heading out for the day, since the smaller body is easier to park and cheaper to run. Size up to the seven-seat Defender only if you genuinely need those extra two seats on a regular basis, not as a once-a-trip option.
