On the road that means the same shove past 120 on the E11, the same relaxed cruising, and the same terrain response system and air suspension for a Hatta track or a firm stretch of sand near the dunes. Lift the ride height, pick the right mode, and it climbs rutted ground that would send a sedan back the way it came. It's still a heavy, expensive vehicle, so deep dune work is a job for someone who already reads sand and travels with recovery gear, not a first attempt in a rental. If your week is mostly tarmac with one adventurous morning built in, this is more capability than you'll use, and that's fine. It's there when you want it.

Five doors, five seats, and a real boot

Land Rover doesn't publish one boot figure for this body that every source agrees on, so treat any single litre number you find elsewhere with suspicion. In practice it swallows three or four large cases and a couple of soft bags with the rear seats up, and folding them flat turns the back into a proper cargo bay, enough for camping gear or a group's luggage on an airport run. What you don't get is the flexibility of a third row for a sixth or seventh passenger. If that's the brief, the longer seven-seat Defender in this fleet is the one to book instead.

Fuel, heat and running it

A supercharged V8 doesn't sip fuel regardless of model year. The official combined figure sits around 14.6 L/100km, and Dubai's stop-start traffic with any real throttle use pushes that higher. The 90-litre tank is good for roughly 600km on paper, but plan on refuelling closer to every 400 to 450km once city driving and a constantly running AC are part of the mix.

The cabin handles a parked Dubai afternoon reasonably well. It's a lot of air to cool, so give it a minute after starting before loading everyone in, but the front vents pull the temperature down fast and rear passengers get their own outlets, not an afterthought. With only five seats to cool instead of seven, the whole cabin settles to a comfortable temperature quicker than the longer three-row version does.

At just over five metres long, this isn't a car you thread through tight spots without thinking. Marina and mall multi-storey ramps need a bit of care, though the high seating position, full camera set and generous ground clearance make speed bumps and steep ramp lips non-events. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are on the renter, as with every car here, and under-fours need a proper child seat.

Who should rent it, and who's over-buying

Rent this Defender if you want the full V8 experience, real off-road ability, and a properly sized five-seat cabin, and you're happy to save on the rate by taking the oldest model year in the line-up rather than the newest. For two adults and three passengers with a Hatta weekend or a desert morning on the itinerary, it does everything the newer cars do, for less.

Size up to the seven-seat long-wheelbase Defender if you regularly need a sixth or seventh seat, even an occasional one. This body doesn't have that option. Size down to the three-door version if it's really just two people most of the time and parking ease matters more than rear-door access. If the fuel bill is the real concern, a six-cylinder Land Rover does most of the same job for noticeably less at the pump.
