We rent the Land Rover Defender 2023 in Dubai with the no-deposit option, so you can have one delivered without parking a five-figure hold on your card. This is the 110 with the supercharged 5.0-litre V8, the P525, which is the version most people picture when they say "Defender." It pulls 525 PS, hits 100 km/h in 5.4 seconds, and rides on permanent four-wheel drive with adjustable air suspension. The thing worth deciding before you book is simple. This is a 4x4 that genuinely works in a Hatta wadi and still feels plush on Sheikh Zayed Road, and you only get your money's worth if you'll actually use both sides of it.
The L663 Defender split the difference between an old-school ladder-frame workhorse and a luxury SUV, and the V8 leans hard into the luxury half without giving up the hardware. You get the off-road kit, low-range, locking centre and rear diffs, wading depth around 900mm, and a 5.0-litre supercharged engine that makes the whole thing move like a hot hatchback when you bury the throttle.
It's quick in a way that surprises people the first time. The supercharger gives it instant shove off the line, the eight-speed auto kicks down without drama, and the V8 burble is loud enough to be a feature rather than a flaw. On the E11 it cruises at three figures completely unbothered, and overtaking is a non-event.

This is where the V8 Defender earns the rent over a soft crossover. The air suspension lifts ground clearance to 291mm in off-road height, the four-wheel drive is permanent rather than a part-time gimmick, and Terrain Response has a proper sand setting that manages the throttle and traction for you when you drop the pressures and head onto the dunes. For Hatta tracks, the rocky climbs near the pools, and the gravel runs out past Al Qudra, it has the clearance and the grip to go where rental crossovers simply can't follow.
A word of honesty though. The V8 is heavy and wide, so a tight, soft, technical dune line is harder work than it would be in a lighter 4x4. It will go almost anywhere, but it asks you to know what you're doing once the sand gets serious. If you've never aired down or driven soft sand, take it to the firmer desert tracks, not the steep stuff.
The flip side of all that capability is size. At just over five metres long and nearly two wide, this Defender fills a standard Marina bay and makes some older multi-storey ramps a careful, fold-the-mirrors affair. The 360-degree cameras help a lot, and the high seating position gives you a commanding view, but you won't be threading it into the tightest mall bays without thinking. Speed bumps and parking-garage ramps are no concern at all with that ride height.
Heat is handled properly. The cabin cools fast from a 45°C soak because there's real cooling capacity here, and the rear passengers get their own vents, which matters on a school run or an airport pickup when the back seats have been baking. Leather can feel like a griddle for the first minute, but the AC catches up quickly.
For airport runs to DXB or DWC, the boot takes a genuine load. The 972 litres behind the second row swallows three or four large cases plus the soft bags, and folding the rear seats opens it right up for a Carrefour-sized run or a week of kit. Five adults travel in comfort; it's a roomy five-seater rather than a true seven, so a big group should size up to a dedicated people-mover.
There's no pretending here. The supercharged V8 is thirsty, and Dubai's stop-start traffic and constant AC load push real-world economy well past the official 14.7 L/100km figure, closer to 16-18 in mixed city use. The 90-litre tank gives you a usable cruising range, but on a heavy week of city driving you'll be at the pump every couple of days. Salik tolls and any RTA fines pass to you, the renter, and seat belts are mandatory in every seat with a child seat required for under-fours. If fuel cost is the thing you're watching, this is the wrong Defender.
Rent the V8 Defender if you want one car that does the desert weekend and the Sheikh Zayed Road commute with equal confidence, and you're happy to pay for petrol to get the V8 and the presence. It's the pick for a Hatta trip with real off-road intent, an airport run with serious luggage, or simply turning up somewhere and being seen doing it.
If you'll never leave tarmac, skip it. A softer luxury crossover will park easier, sip far less fuel, and give you most of the comfort for a fraction of the running cost. The Defender's whole argument is the capability, and there's no point paying for it if it spends the week on Jumeirah Beach Road.
