Dark paint on a car this size soaks up real heat, and that's worth saying plainly before you book the Land Rover Defender 2023 in Dubai: leave this one in an unshaded mall lot or a Hatta trailhead through a July afternoon, and the door handles, the wheel and the seats all come back hotter than they would on a lighter car. We still deliver it to your door within one to two hours of booking, because underneath that black shell sits the full 525 hp supercharged V8 and the off-road hardware that makes the extra heat worth discussing rather than avoiding. This page works out whether that trade actually pays off for your week.

This is the 5.0-litre supercharged V8 Defender, the same P525 engine Land Rover fits across the range: 525 hp and 625 Nm of torque through an eight-speed automatic, with a claimed 5.4 seconds to 100 km/h and a limited top speed of 240 km/h. Full-time all-wheel drive and the terrain response system read the road, or the sand, and adjust the drivetrain without you doing anything about it. Air suspension raises ground clearance to around 291mm at its highest setting, and the wading depth is rated to 900mm.
On Sheikh Zayed Road that shows up as an overtake that needs barely a squeeze of throttle and a cruise at 120 that feels closer to idling than working. Point it toward a graded Hatta track or a firm run of sand near the dune line, and the same system that shrugs off a Marina speed bump gets you through without much drama. It's still a heavy, expensive 4x4, so soft, deep dune work is a job for someone who already reads sand and carries recovery gear, not a first attempt in a rental car. None of this capability matters if your week never leaves the tarmac, whatever colour sits under the bonnet.
This is the five-door body, not the shorter three-door version also in the fleet, and not the seven-seat long-wheelbase car either. Five seats is the whole arrangement here, so there's no occasional third row to fold away or plan around. Every passenger gets a real door and a proper seat, which matters the moment you're buckling a child seat in or helping someone less mobile into the back rather than tipping a front seat forward and climbing past it.
Land Rover hasn't settled on one boot figure for this body that every source agrees on, so we won't hand you an invented litre count. What holds up in practice: with the rear seats up, it takes several large cases and a couple of soft bags without a fight, and folding them flat opens enough floor for camping gear or a full group's luggage on an airport run. What you don't get is a sixth or seventh seat for the odd extra passenger. If that's the actual brief, the long-wheelbase Defender elsewhere in this fleet is the one to book instead.
Colour isn't just cosmetic on a car this size. A dark body panel left in direct Dubai sun for a few hours runs noticeably hotter to the touch than a pale one, and that soaked-in heat works into the cabin through the doors, the roof and the glass before the air conditioning has caught up. Expect the steering wheel and door handles to need a second before you grab them after a few hours parked at a Hatta trailhead or an open mall lot with no shade, and give the AC a minute once you're back inside before loading everyone else in. Once it's running, the front vents pull the temperature down quickly and the second row gets its own outlets rather than a trickle off the dash, so the wait is short, just not instant.
A supercharged V8 doesn't sip fuel because the paint is dark or light. The official combined figure sits around 14.6 L/100km, and Dubai's stop-start traffic with any real throttle use pushes that higher in daily driving. The 90-litre tank is rated for roughly 600km on paper, but plan on a fill closer to every 400 to 450km once city driving and a constantly running AC are the normal routine rather than the exception.
At just over five metres long, this isn't a car you thread into a tight bay without thinking. Marina and mall multi-storey ramps ask for a bit of care, though the high seating position, full camera set and generous ground clearance make speed bumps and steep ramp lips non-events. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental sit with the renter, and under-fours need a proper child seat.
Rent this one if you'll actually use what the black paint is quietly taxing you for: real off-road capability, the full V8, and a straightforward five-seat cabin for a family of four or a small group with a genuine Hatta morning or desert weekend on the plan. On that brief, the extra minute the AC needs after a hot afternoon is a fair trade for what the car does the rest of the time.
Size down, or at least pick a lighter colour, if the off-road side of the spec sheet is mostly theoretical for your trip. A silver or white Defender elsewhere in this fleet gives up nothing underneath and settles to a comfortable cabin a little faster after a few hours in the sun. If you need a sixth or seventh seat even occasionally, the long-wheelbase Defender with the folding third row covers that and this body doesn't. If the fuel bill worries you more than the badge, a six-cylinder Land Rover does most of the same week for meaningfully less at the pump.
Our policy on this car runs 250km a day, then AED 0.5 for every extra kilometre, and you need to be 25 to take the keys. Being a premium vehicle, it typically carries a refundable deposit rather than a no-deposit booking. Book it for the capability the black paint is billing you for, and make sure your week actually cashes that in.
