The off-road hardware backs up the styling even if most rentals never see sand. Air suspension raises the body to around 291mm at its off-road setting, it wades through 900mm of water, and the short three-door body gives it steeper approach and departure angles than the longer Defenders in the same fleet, useful on the rutted ground near Hatta. None of that matters on a week that never leaves the highway, and deep dune driving in a car this heavy and expensive is a job for someone who already reads sand and carries recovery gear, not a first attempt.

Three doors, one boot, and who actually fits

There's no fourth door on this body, so getting into the back means tipping or sliding the front seat forward rather than opening a door for whoever's sitting there. Fine for two adults out for the day. It gets old quickly if you're installing a child seat more than once a trip, and worth knowing before you book rather than after.

The boot holds about 297 litres behind the rear seats, enough for a couple of soft weekend bags and a cooler, not a family's worth of hard cases. The 90-litre tank is good for roughly 600km on paper, but plan on a fill closer to every 400 to 450km once city driving and a constantly running AC are part of the routine.

Black paint is the honest trade-off here. Left in an unshaded mall lot for an afternoon, the roof and bonnet come back hot to the touch, more so than the white or silver Defenders in the same fleet. What works in this car's favour is the smaller cabin behind that dark paint: with no third row and a shorter footprint than the four-door and seven-seat versions, there's less air to cool, so it settles down faster than the bigger Defenders once the AC gets going. Give it a minute after you climb back in before loading anyone else, and the front vents are already pulling hard by then. The short body also threads a tight Marina or mall multi-storey bay more easily than the longer Defenders, and the ground clearance makes speed bumps and steep ramp lips a non-issue. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental sit with the renter, and under-fours need a proper child seat, worth planning for given the two-door access to the back.

Who this black V8 actually suits, and who should pick differently

Rent this Defender if the point is a genuine V8, real off-road ability and a two-seat-of-purpose cabin, and if the 21-year minimum age matters to you. For a couple or a small group with a Hatta morning or a desert weekend planned, it's a properly good time and easier to park than the longer Defenders once you're back in the city.

Look at the four-door or seven-seat Defender instead if you need rear-door access or real luggage room, since this shape trades both for its size and its character.
