For a Hatta wadi or a run into the dunes past Al Qudra, the Land Rover Defender 2022 is the rental that goes where soft crossovers turn back, and then drives you home down Sheikh Zayed Road in comfort. We hand one over anywhere in Dubai inside one to two hours, and you can book from 18 rather than the 21 most desks require. This is the 110 fitted with the supercharged 5.0-litre V8, the P525. The decision worth making before you book is whether you'll actually use the off-road side of it, because that capability is the whole reason to choose this over a cheaper, softer SUV.

Desert, wadis and the rough stuff

This is where the V8 Defender earns the rent. The air suspension lifts ground clearance to around 291 mm in off-road height, the all-wheel drive is permanent rather than a part-time gimmick, and Terrain Response has a proper sand setting that manages throttle and traction for you once you've dropped the pressures. For Hatta tracks, the rocky climbs near the pools, and the gravel runs out past Al Qudra, it has the clearance and the grip to follow lines a rental crossover simply can't.

One honest caveat. The V8 is heavy and wide, so a tight, soft, technical dune line is harder work than it would be in a lighter 4x4. It'll go almost anywhere, but it asks you to know what you're doing once the sand gets serious. If you've never aired down or driven soft sand, stick to the firmer desert tracks rather than the steep stuff.

The V8 on the highway

The same engine that hauls it up a rock step makes it genuinely quick on tarmac. The supercharger gives instant shove off the line, the 8-speed auto kicks down cleanly, and 100 km/h comes up in 5.4 seconds, which surprises people the first time. On the E11 it sits at three figures completely unbothered, and overtaking takes no planning. The V8 note is loud enough to be part of the appeal. For a 4x4 with this much off-road hardware, it's no slouch on the school run or the airport dash either.

Size, parking and staying cool

The trade-off for all that capability is bulk. At just over five metres long and nearly two wide, this Defender fills a standard Marina bay and turns some older multi-storey ramps into a fold-the-mirrors job. The 360-degree cameras and the high driving position help you place it, but the tightest mall bays still want care. Ride height means speed bumps and parking ramps never trouble it.

Heat is managed well. The cabin pulls down quickly from a 45-degree soak, and rear passengers get their own vents, so the back seats aren't an oven after an hour in the sun. The leather is hot for the first minute, then the AC catches up fast.

What it costs to run

No dodging it: the supercharged V8 is thirsty. The official combined figure is 14.7 L/100km, and Dubai's stop-start traffic plus constant AC load push real consumption into the 16 to 18 range in mixed city use. The 90-litre tank gives a decent range, but a heavy week of city driving means topping up every couple of days, and off-road work uses more again. Salik tolls and any RTA fines pass to you, and seat belts are mandatory in every seat, with a child seat required for under-fours. If running cost is your top concern, this isn't the car.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the V8 Defender 2022 if a desert weekend or a Hatta trip is the point of your week, and you want a 4x4 that's serious off-road but still plush and quick on the motorway. The capability is real, the presence is undeniable, and renting from 18 with flexible payment makes it reachable.

Skip it if you'll never leave the tarmac. A softer luxury crossover parks easier, drinks far less fuel, and gives you most of the comfort for a fraction of the cost. The Defender's whole argument is what it can do off the road, and there's no sense paying for that if it spends the week on Jumeirah Beach Road.
