Say your day in Dubai runs the same loop: a morning crawl down Sheikh Zayed Road, a midday errand or two, an airport drop in the evening, and you want the cheapest sensible automatic to carry it. That's where we hand over the Kia Pegas 2023. We rent it in Dubai from age 18, while most of the market won't put you behind the wheel until 21, so younger drivers and new residents can actually book one. This is a rock-bottom-cost compact sedan with a boot bigger than its price suggests, and this page is about whether that trade, basic cabin for low running cost and real luggage room, is the right one for your week.
A five-seat economy sedan with a 1.4-litre petrol four and a 4-speed automatic, front-wheel drive, 95 HP. None of that is exciting, and it isn't meant to be. The Pegas exists to move two to four people and their stuff around a city cheaply and without fuss. Where it earns its keep is the boot and the fuel bill. Where it asks you to compromise is everything you touch and most of what you hear above 100 km/h.

Yes, and this is the Pegas's strongest argument. The boot is the reason renters pick it over a same-price hatchback. Two large suitcases plus a couple of cabin bags go in flat, which covers a family arriving at DXB or a pair on a week's stay with full luggage. A hatch in this class usually swallows one big case and a soft bag before you start folding seats. If your week involves real airport runs to DXB or DWC, the Pegas does a job a small hatch can't. In the back, three fit at a push, two in comfort.
Not often. The tank holds 43 litres and Kia rates economy at 17.8 km/L, which on paper is a range around 765 km. Real Dubai driving, all that idling in traffic with the AC fighting the heat, pulls that down, so plan closer to 13 to 15 km/L in summer city use. Even then you're filling up maybe once a week on a normal commute, and petrol here is cheap enough that the Pegas is close to the lowest fuel cost you can rent. That low running cost is half the reason to choose it.
Be clear about what you're getting inside. Hard plastics, basic infotainment, manual everything you'd expect at this price. It's clean and it works, but nobody books a Pegas for the cabin. What matters more in June is the AC, and here the news is good for a budget car. The cabin is small, so when you start a car that's been baking at 45 degrees, the front vents pull it down quickly, faster than a big sedan would. There are no rear vents, so back-seat passengers feel it a beat later, but for two up front the Pegas cools fast.
This is where the small footprint pays you back. At 4.3 metres long the Pegas slots into tight multi-storey bays, handles Marina ramps without scraping its 150 mm clearance, and makes U-turns and reversing easy. Speed bumps around residential areas are no drama at that clearance as long as you don't load it heavy and take them slowly. For a renter doing mall runs, school drops, and street parking, the size is a genuine plus, not a limitation.
Honest version: the Pegas is a city car that copes with the highway, not the other way round. The 95 HP and 4-speed auto get you up to motorway speed fine and it'll sit at 120 on E11 all day. Ask for a quick overtake, or load four adults and luggage and merge onto Sheikh Zayed Road, and you'll feel the engine working and hear it. Above 100 it runs out of easy pace. That's normal for the class, but if your week is mostly long highway hauls, it's worth knowing.
You pay the Salik tolls on whatever gates you cross, and any RTA fines during the rental pass to you, so drive it like it's yours. Seatbelts are mandatory in every seat, and children under four need a child seat. None of this is Pegas-specific, but it's the part renters forget until the bill arrives.
Rent the Pegas if you want the cheapest reliable automatic for city commuting and airport runs, you value a real boot, and you don't care that the cabin is plain. For a single driver, a couple, or a small family doing mostly city miles, it's the smart-money pick, and renting from 18 makes it reachable for drivers other desks turn away.
Step up if you'll spend serious time on the highway or regularly carry four adults. A Honda City gives you more power, a quieter cabin, and a calmer cruise for not much more. If you want to stay rock-bottom on price but prefer a slightly nicer drive, a Mitsubishi Attrage is the closest rival worth a look. But for the lowest running cost with luggage room that punches above its class, the Pegas is the one to book.
