Kia Pegas 2021 - start from 68 AED / day

Most rental desks won't put you behind the wheel until you're 21. We rent the Kia Pegas 2021 in Dubai from age 18, which makes it one of the few automatics a younger driver or a brand-new resident can actually book here. It's a plain, cheap, dependable economy sedan, and that's the point: a forgiving first car for someone still getting used to Dubai's roads, with a boot big enough for an airport run and a fuel bill small enough to live with. This page is about whether a simple, slightly slow sedan is the right starter rental for your week, or whether you should spend a little more once you've found your feet.

A car that's easy to learn on

If Dubai's roads are new to you, the Pegas is a soft place to start. The automatic gearbox takes the clutch out of the equation in stop-and-go traffic, the controls are plain dials and buttons you'll read in a minute, and the small footprint means you're not wrestling a big car into tight bays while you're still learning the lanes. It doesn't have the power to get you into trouble in a hurry, which at this stage is a feature. You sit a touch higher than a hatchback, visibility is good, and nothing about it asks for experience you don't have yet.

The Dubai rules a new driver should know

Renting from 18 doesn't change the road rules, and the ones that catch newcomers are the cheap mistakes. You pay the Salik tolls on every gate you cross, and they add up faster than people expect along Sheikh Zayed Road. Any RTA fine during your rental, a speed camera or a parking ticket, passes to you, not us, so drive it like the bill is yours, because it is. Seatbelts are mandatory in every seat, front and back, and a child under four needs a proper child seat. None of this is Pegas-specific, but it's the part first-timers learn the hard way.

How often you'll fill up

The 43-litre tank and a real economy figure around 17 km/L give you somewhere near 700 km of mixed driving, less in summer when the AC works hard in city traffic. For a normal week that's one fill at the start and maybe a top-up before you hand it back. The engine is small, petrol here is cheap, and the running cost is about as low as a sedan gets. For a younger renter watching the budget, that low fuel bill is part of what makes the car add up.

Boot space and the airport run

The 475-litre boot is the surprise. Two large suitcases go in flat with room for cabin bags on top, which covers a DXB pickup or a week's stay with full luggage and keeps the back seat clear. A hatchback at this price usually swallows one big case before you fold seats. Three big hard cases and you start stacking, so a fourth passenger with their own luggage is where it gets tight. For a couple or a small group, though, the trunk does a job that surprises people the first time they load it.

Heat, AC and parking

Dubai summers push past 45 degrees, and a small cabin has one advantage there: there's less of it to cool. The front vents pull the heat down quickly once you're moving, so you're comfortable within a few minutes. There are no rear vents, so back-seat passengers wait a little longer, worth knowing if you'll carry people behind you in July. Parking is the easy part. At 4.3 metres with light steering, the Pegas slips into tight multi-storey bays and Marina side streets without drama, and the 150 mm clearance clears speed bumps and ramps cleanly.

Where it runs out of road

Be clear about the limit before you book. The 95 hp and four-speed auto are built for cost, not pace. Around the city the Pegas is fine and you won't think about the engine. Push onto the E11 and it'll cruise at 120, but an overtake at speed needs planning rather than a stab of the pedal, and above 100 it runs short of easy power. For city loops and the occasional highway stretch that's no problem. For long, fast inter-emirate driving, you'll wish for more.

Our recommendation

Rent the Pegas 2021 if you're 18 to 20 and most desks won't take you, or you're new here and want a cheap, forgiving automatic to learn Dubai on. It's easy to park, cheap to run, and the boot handles a real airport load. As a first rental it does exactly what you need.

Once you're comfortable and your week involves long highway hauls or four adults who want comfort, step up. A Honda City gives you the power and quiet the Pegas trades for its rate, and a newer Pegas gives you the same shape with a fresher cabin. For a reachable, low-stress starter sedan, though, this one earns its place.
