The engine, and how it drives

The Forte runs a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine making around 149 hp and 192 Nm of torque, paired with a conventional 6-speed automatic rather than the CVT some rivals in this class use. That matters more than it sounds. A stepped automatic shifts in a way most drivers find familiar and easy to trust, especially at the low, stop-start speeds of Dubai traffic where a CVT can feel like it's hunting for a gear that isn't there.

On the road the car is unremarkable in the best sense. It picks up cleanly from a light, holds 120 km/h on Sheikh Zayed Road without strain, and has enough in reserve for a normal overtake. Load it with four adults and their bags and ask for a full-throttle pass on the highway, though, and you'll feel the car working rather than gliding. It's front-wheel drive with no pretensions to anything else, so it belongs on tarmac. A Marina ramp or a mall's multi-storey bay is well within its turning circle at 4,640 mm long; a dune track is not.

Boot, back seat and the daily load

At 502 litres the boot is the Forte's quiet strength, closer to what you'd expect from a car a size up than an economy sedan. Two large suitcases sit flat with a couple of soft bags stacked around them, so a DXB or DWC pickup for a couple with a week's luggage doesn't turn into a repacking exercise at the kerb. Grocery runs and flat-pack furniture trips work too, once you fold the rear bench.

The back seat holds up its end. A 2,700 mm wheelbase gives rear passengers real knee room, so two adults ride comfortably behind two more on a drive to the coast or across town. Three across the back is fine for a short trip and less so for a full day. Push it to four adults plus a full set of luggage for a week away and the car starts to feel like it's carrying more than it was built for, which is the point where a mid-size sedan earns its extra rental cost. For two adults and a couple of kids on the school run and weekend mall trips, there's space to spare and no compromise to explain away.

Running cost, heat and the cabin

The 50-litre tank and roughly 14 km/l in mixed city and highway driving work out to about 700 km between fills, so a resident on a daily commute is looking at one stop a week rather than two or three. Your rental includes 250 km a day, and beyond that extra distance is billed at AED 0.5 per kilometre, cheap enough that a weekend run to Al Ain or Abu Dhabi won't change your plans. Salik tolls and any RTA fines are the renter's, as with any car here, and worth budgeting for if your daily route crosses a toll gate both ways.

A parked cabin in July is the honest test of any rental, and a car this size has an advantage over a bigger SUV simply because there's less air inside to chill. The front vents pull the temperature down within a minute or so of setting off, and rear passengers get their own vents on this generation, which counts when the dash reads high-40s and the car is full. Crack the windows for a few seconds before you climb back in and park in shade when you can. It isn't a luxury climate system, but for what this car costs to rent, it's exactly the system you'd want.

Who should rent it, and who should size up

Rent the Forte 2021 if you want a Dubai week or month with no surprises: a sensible automatic that's cheap to fuel, carries real luggage, and doesn't ask you to think about it once you've picked up the keys. It suits a commuter, a couple flying into DXB with cases, or a small family doing errands and school runs on a budget that doesn't stretch to an SUV.

Size up if your regular load is four adults with a full set of bags, since the back seat goes from generous to tight at that point, or if you want more presence and pace than a mainstream compact sedan gives, in which case a K5 is the better fit. And if any part of your trip touches sand or unpaved ground, this is a front-wheel-drive road car, not a 4x4, so leave that plan for something else in the fleet. For everyone in between, the Forte does its job without drama, which is precisely why it's worth booking.
