The JAC J7 2024 is one of the newer sedan names to join our Dubai fleet, and it still doesn't carry the recognition a Sunny or an Elantra has built up over years on the road. That's a fair thing to notice before you book, not a reason to skip past it. Look past the badge and the J7 2024 is a genuinely roomy fastback sedan, with a cabin and boot that punch well above what an economy sedan usually gives you, and we get it to your door within one to two hours of booking. The question this page settles is whether the extra space is worth renting a name you haven't driven before.
Open the bonnet and the surprise is the turbo. Most economy sedans rely on a naturally aspirated engine that needs revs before it delivers anything useful, but the J7 2024 runs a 1.5-litre turbocharged four-cylinder making 150 hp at 5,500 rpm. The figure that matters more day to day is torque: 210 Nm on a flat plateau from 2,000 to 4,500 rpm, so the pull is there at ordinary engine speeds, not only near the redline. Paired with a CVT automatic and front-wheel drive, merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road or working through a roundabout takes a light foot rather than a stab at the pedal.
Keep the expectations honest, though. This is a comfortable cruiser built for commuting and airport runs, not a quick car. Load four adults and a full boot and the engine works harder for it, though it never runs out of breath the way a smaller non-turbo car does under the same load. For daily driving and the odd highway trip, it has exactly enough in reserve, and no more.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Engine | 1.5-litre turbocharged 4-cylinder (1,499 cc) |
| Power | 150 hp at 5,500 rpm |
| Torque | 210 Nm from 2,000 to 4,500 rpm |
| Transmission | CVT automatic |
| Drive | Front-wheel drive |
| Seats | 5 |
| Boot | 540 litres seats up, up to about 1,650 litres folded |
| Fuel economy | 16.4 km/L claimed best case, 12 to 13 km/L in real city driving |
| Fuel tank | 55 litres |
| Range | roughly 650 to 750 km of city driving per tank (desk estimate) |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4,772 x 1,820 x 1,490 mm |
| Ground clearance | 120 mm |
| Colour | Black |
Size is the other half of the argument. At 4,772 mm long on a 2,760 mm wheelbase, the J7 2024 sits closer to a Kia K5 in footprint than to the Sunny or Elantra it usually gets cross-shopped against, and the back seat shows it: two adults get real knee room on a longer drive, not the knees-up seating a compact sedan hands rear passengers. The trade is the fastback roofline. It looks sharp, but it slopes toward the boot and takes headroom with it, so anyone over about six feet notices the ceiling on a trip past twenty minutes, and three across the bench suits a mall run rather than a full day.
The boot backs up the size claim better than the back seat does. It holds 540 litres with the seats up and opens to roughly 1,650 litres folded, more than most economy and compact sedans manage, so two large cases and a couple of soft bags load without repacking, useful on a DXB or DWC collection when the group is travelling heavy. Width is 1,820 mm, manageable in a Marina basement or a tight mall bay with extra care, but ground clearance is a low 120 mm. Ease off over the taller speed bumps and steeper ramps. There isn't much room to spare underneath.
The mileage allowance is worth understanding before you compare it to a car that caps you by the day. The J7 2024 comes with 2,500 km included across the whole rental, not per day, so you spend it however the week actually shapes up rather than losing any unused daily amount. A normal week of commuting and errands runs a few hundred kilometres, and a day trip to Hatta or Al Ain adds another 200 to 260 km round trip, so most single-week bookings sit comfortably inside that block. Push past it and it costs AED 0.5 for every extra kilometre, so a two-week booking or several day trips stacked together deserves a quick sum first. Minimum age here is 21, lower than plenty of the market, and Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are the renter's to cover.
JAC hasn't published a certified combined economy figure for the GCC J7 worth quoting as a rating. A claimed 16.4 km/L shows up in some marketing material, best treated as a ceiling rather than what you'll see running the AC through a Dubai afternoon. Real city driving lands closer to 12 to 13 km/L, and even at that rate the 55-litre tank stretches to roughly 650 to 750 km, so a normal week needs one or two stops at the pump rather than several.
Black is the hardest colour to manage in Dubai heat. It soaks up the sun, so a J7 left parked in the open for a few hours in summer comes back properly hot. The front vents pull the cabin down at a good rate once you're moving, but this is a bigger cabin than an economy hatchback's to clear, so give the AC a couple of minutes with the fan up before everyone climbs back in. Crack a window first if it's been sitting in full sun, and park in shade when you have the choice.
Rent the J7 2024 if space and comfort matter more than a name you already recognise. The back seat has genuine legroom, the boot swallows a family's luggage without complaint, and the turbo's early torque means merging onto the highway is never a struggle, even loaded. It suits families, heavy packers and anyone doing regular airport runs, since the cabin and boot are the actual reason to pick it over a smaller economy car, and the mileage block means a day trip out of the city doesn't need planning around a daily cap.
Look elsewhere in a couple of honest cases. If a familiar badge matters more to you than the extra room, an Elantra, Sunny or K5 sits at a similar rate and gets you that, though you give back some of the J7's cabin and boot to have it. And if you'll regularly carry four adults for a full day, the fastback's rear headroom is a real limit worth knowing before you book. Keep this car on tarmac too: at 120 mm of clearance and front-wheel drive, it's built for the road to Hatta, not the tracks around it.
For most renters weighing more cabin and a generous mileage allowance against a badge they haven't driven before, the JAC J7 2024 is one of the more sensible bookings in Dubai's economy class. You're paying for the space and the kilometres, not the name on the boot lid.
