Under the bonnet sits a 1.5 litre turbo, and behind it is a cabin that measures up closer to a mid-size sedan than to the Sunny or Elantra it usually gets cross-shopped against. Paired with a CVT automatic and front-wheel drive, that means pulling into a gap on Emirates Road or working through a roundabout in Downtown doesn't take flooring the pedal and hoping for the best. A naturally aspirated economy sedan at a similar rate needs more revs to do the same job, and you feel the difference the first time you merge. Reliability on an unfamiliar name is a fair thing to worry about, but on a week's booking that risk is ours, not yours. If something goes wrong, you call and we swap the car.

Line up the dimensions and the case gets easier to make. At 4,772 mm long on a 2,760 mm wheelbase, the J7 sits a size class above the Sunny and closer to what you'd expect from a Camry, and the back seat shows it. Check the mileage terms before you book. This car includes 250 km a day, and anything past that runs AED 0.5 for every extra kilometre, reasonable for the class as long as a longer day out to Hatta or Al Ain gets a quick sum first. Salik tolls and any RTA fines picked up during the rental land on the renter, as they do on every car here, and the minimum age on this one is 25.

White is an easy colour to live with here. It reflects more of the sun than a dark paint job would, so a car left parked for a few hours in July doesn't heat-soak quite as badly as a black or grey J7 does. It's still a bigger cabin than an economy hatchback's to pull down, though, so give the AC a minute or two with the fan up before everyone gets back in, and crack a window first if it's been sitting in full sun.

Where the J7 makes sense, and where it doesn't

Book the J7 if the priority is space and pull for the money. The back seat has genuine legroom, the boot swallows a family's luggage without complaint, and the turbo's early torque means merging onto the highway is never a struggle. It suits families, heavy packers and anyone doing regular airport runs, because the cabin and the boot are the actual reason to choose it over a smaller economy car.

Book something else in two honest cases. If a name you already trust matters more than the extra room, an Elantra or Sunny sits at a similar rate and gives you that, even though you give back some cabin and boot to get it. And if four adults are riding for a full day, the fastback's rear headroom is a real limit, not a minor one. Keep this car on tarmac as well. At 120 mm of clearance and front-wheel drive, it's built for the road to Hatta, not the tracks around it.
