If you want a compact luxury SUV that feels expensive inside without the German lease-return price tag, the Infiniti QX50 2021 is one of the easier calls on our fleet, and we'll hand it to you from age 18 when most of the Dubai market won't rent you anything until 21. It seats five, rides soft, and wraps the cabin in the kind of materials that make a week of school runs and dinner reservations feel a notch above the usual rental. This page is about who that suits. For a couple or a small family it's a smart, comfortable pick. If you're chasing the coupe roofline or hauling five adults and luggage, read on before you book.
The QX50 sits in the compact-luxury class against the Audi Q5, BMW X3 and Mercedes GLC, and it undercuts all three on rate while matching them on cabin feel. Under the bonnet is Infiniti's 2.0-litre VC-Turbo four, a clever variable-compression engine making 268 horsepower. On paper that's plenty, and 0 to 100 km/h comes up in about 7.3 seconds, quick enough to merge onto Sheikh Zayed Road without drama.
The honest caveat is the gearbox. It's a CVT, not a conventional automatic, and under hard acceleration it lets the revs flare before the speed catches up. Around town and at a cruise you'll never notice. Floor it to overtake on the E11 and the engine drones a beat ahead of the car. If you spend most of your week in traffic and on errands, the CVT is smooth and frankly relaxing. If you want the throttle response of a German turbo, the QX50 isn't trying to give you that.
This is where the QX50 earns its keep. The dashboard is genuinely nicely finished, the front seats are wide and supportive, and rear legroom is strong for the class. The back bench slides, so you can trade boot space for stretch-out room depending on who's sitting where.
In a Dubai summer the cabin question matters more than the cup holders. Park this in open sun at 45 degrees and the first minute is unpleasant, same as any car. The QX50's AC pulls a parked cabin down to comfortable in three to four minutes with the fans up, helped by rear vents that keep passengers in the back from cooking on a longer drive. It's a roomy interior, so it takes a touch longer to cool than a small hatch, but the system has the muscle for it. Crack the windows for the first thirty seconds and it's quicker still.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Engine | 2.0L VC-Turbo 4-cylinder |
| Power | 268 hp |
| Transmission | CVT automatic |
| Drivetrain | Front-wheel drive or all-wheel drive |
| Seats | 5 |
| 0-100 km/h | 7.3 seconds |
| Fuel tank | 60 litres |
| Fuel economy | roughly 9 to 10 L/100km combined |
| Boot | 880 litres (seats up) |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4694 x 1903 x 1679 mm |
| Ground clearance | 218 mm |
Boot space behind the rear seats is 880 litres, which is generous for a compact SUV. In real terms that's two large hard cases plus a couple of soft bags, or an airport run for a family of four without playing Tetris. Drop the rear seats and it opens up to handle a flat-pack or a bike. For couples it's frankly more boot than you'll use.
At 4.69 metres long it's a compact SUV in name, but it's wide. Marina multi-storey bays and the tighter mall parking levels are doable, though you'll appreciate the reversing camera when you're squeezing between two other SUVs. It's not a Picanto you can flick into any gap. The 218 mm of ground clearance clears Dubai's speed bumps and mall ramps without scraping, and gives you a slightly higher seating position than a sedan, which most renters here prefer.
The 60-litre tank paired with real-world economy around 9 to 10 litres per 100 km means a week of normal city driving needs roughly one fill, maybe creeping toward a second if you're doing daily airport runs to DXB or DWC. It's a turbocharged petrol four, so stop-start traffic on a hot day pushes consumption up, but it's nowhere near thirsty for a luxury SUV.
A few Dubai facts worth stating plainly. Salik tolls are billed to you, the renter, so the gates on Sheikh Zayed Road and the bridges add up over a week. Any RTA fines during your rental pass to you as well. Seatbelts are required in every seat, and children under four need a proper child seat, which we can fit before delivery if you ask.
Rent the QX50 if you're a couple or a small family who wants a quiet, comfortable, properly premium SUV at a sensible rate, and you do mostly city and highway driving rather than hard overtaking. It's one of the best value cabins in its class, the boot is big, and it handles Dubai's heat and bumps without complaint.
Skip it if style is the priority. The QX55 is the same car under a coupe roofline and looks sharper for it, at the cost of some rear headroom and boot space, so book that one if the silhouette matters more than the extra cargo. And if you regularly carry five adults plus a full set of luggage, or you want the punchier feel of a turbo automatic, size up to a larger SUV or look at a German rival. For most people who want luxury without overpaying, though, the QX50 is the easy answer, and we'll have it at your door in one to two hours.
