How it drives, and why that's the point

The 2.0-litre turbo sends its power to the back wheels, and the difference shows the moment you lean on it. Off the line it's brisk, and the mid-range has enough shove to make an overtake on the E11 a quick decision rather than a project. The 7.3-second 0-100 figure tells you it's quick; the rear-drive balance tells you it's also composed when you're pushing through a sweeping interchange.

At a 120 cruise it sits flat and quiet, the kind of car that shrinks a long airport run. This is where the Q50 separates itself from the front-drive crowd. You're not paying for badge alone, you're getting a sedan that was actually engineered to be driven.

The boot holds 382 litres. That's a sensible saloon shape, so two large cases plus a couple of soft bags load cleanly, and a DXB run for two with luggage is no trouble. Pack for four adults with full-size suitcases and it starts to fill, but for the typical couple or small-family rental it's plenty.

Fuel, and how often you'll fill up

The 76-litre tank is generous for this class, and it's the number that decides your week. Driven mostly in the city you'll see real-world consumption in the region of 10 to 11 litres per 100 km, more if you sit in Marina crawl with the AC on full. From May to September this is the spec that matters most. Leave the Q50 in the sun at 45 degrees and the cabin bakes, but the climate system pulls it back down quickly once you're moving. The front vents hit hard, and because the cabin is compact rather than cavernous, it cools faster than a big SUV. Give it a minute with the doors shut and it's comfortable. Rear passengers get vents too, so nobody in the back is left suffering on the school run.

Parking, ramps and the costs that fall to you

At 4.82 metres it's a full-size sedan, so it's longer than a compact and you'll feel that in a tight Marina multi-storey. Nothing dramatic, just park with a little care in the narrow bays. Ride height is low, in keeping with the sporting brief, so take the steep mall ramps and sharper speed bumps gently rather than at speed.

Four adults with full suitcases every day will prefer a roomier sedan or an SUV, and if you genuinely don't care how a car steers, a front-drive saloon will cost you less for similar space.
