We hand over the Hyundai Sonata 2025 across Dubai with a no-deposit option, so you can book this midsize sedan without parking a chunk of cash with us for the week. It rents here as a comfortable, well-equipped saloon: roomy in the back, big in the boot, and easy on a long stretch of Sheikh Zayed Road. This page is about one decision. The Sonata is a strong value family-and-business car if you want space and refinement, but it leans comfort over sport, and for some renters a smaller sedan or a midsize SUV makes more sense.
The Sonata sits a class above the small sedans people usually default to at a Dubai rental desk. It's a full midsize, 4,900 mm long, with a cabin that genuinely fits four adults and a fifth at a push. The 1.6-litre turbo four makes 180 hp and 264 Nm through an eight-speed automatic to the front wheels. That's enough to merge onto the E11 without drama and hold a relaxed 120 all day. It is not a quick car in the hot-hatch sense, and it doesn't pretend to be. The turbo gives you a useful shove from low revs for overtaking, then settles into quiet cruising, which is what most renters want from a car this size.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Engine | 1.6L turbo petrol, 4-cyl |
| Power | 180 hp @ 5,500 rpm |
| Torque | 264 Nm |
| Transmission | 8-speed automatic |
| Drivetrain | Front-wheel drive |
| Seats | 5 |
| Fuel economy | 7.6 L/100 km combined |
| Tank | 60 litres |
| Range | around 780 km combined |
| Boot | 453 litres |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4,900 x 1,859 x 1,445 mm |
| Ground clearance | 135 mm |
This is where the Sonata earns its rate. The boot holds 453 litres, which is a real family-and-airport figure, not a small-sedan one. Two large hard cases plus a couple of cabin bags go in flat for a DXB or DWC run, with room left over for a stroller or a few mall bags. Three adults plus luggage for a week is comfortable, and four is fine for shorter airport hops.
Inside, rear legroom is the headline. Two adults sit behind two adults without negotiating the front seats forward, which you can't say of the smaller sedans renting at similar money. The trade-off is the obvious one: at nearly five metres, the Sonata wants a bit more thought in tight multi-storey bays and on Marina ramps than a compact would. It parks fine, the camera and sensors help, but you'll use them.
Pull the Sonata out of a car park in July and the cabin is the size of the problem. A larger interior takes a little longer to cool than a small hatch, but the air conditioning here is up to it. Front vents pull hard, and rear passengers get their own vents, which matters when you've got kids or colleagues sweating in the back on a 45-degree afternoon. Give it two or three minutes after pickup and the cabin is genuinely comfortable. Park in shade where you can, and the recovery is quicker still. For a week of school runs, airport trips and evening drives, the climate side is one less thing to worry about.
The Sonata is built for the way most people actually drive in Dubai: long, flat, fast roads and the occasional crawl. On Sheikh Zayed Road it's quiet, planted and stable in the wind, and the steering is light enough for easy lane changes without feeling vague at speed. The ride soaks up expansion joints and the worst of the speed bumps; at 135 mm of ground clearance it clears standard humps and mall ramps without scraping, though you'll slow for the aggressive ones like anyone else.
Fuel works out sensibly for the size. Officially it's 7.6 L/100 km combined, and with the 60-litre tank that's roughly 780 km between fills on paper. In real Dubai use, with AC running flat out and stop-start traffic, plan closer to 9 or 10 L/100 km and a fill every five or six days of normal driving. That's good for a midsize sedan, and it's a long way from needing the pump every other day.
A couple of operational notes, briefly. Salik tolls and any RTA fines run on the car go to you, the renter, so the gate beeps are on your account. Seat belts are required in every seat. Beyond that the Sonata is undemanding.
Rent the Sonata if you want a comfortable, good-looking saloon with room for a family or a couple of business colleagues and their luggage, and you spend most of your week on Dubai's main roads. For the money it's one of the easiest midsize sedans to live with here, and the no-deposit booking makes it a low-friction choice.
Skip it in two cases. If it's just you or two people doing short city errands and tight parking, a smaller sedan is cheaper to rent and easier to thread through Marina car parks, and you won't miss the extra space. And if you're heading for Hatta, the dunes or a graded desert track, the Sonata's 135 mm clearance and front-wheel drive aren't built for that. Size up to a midsize SUV instead. For everyone in between, the people who want a calm, spacious, refined car for a Dubai week, the Sonata is exactly the right call.
