On a long crawl down Sheikh Zayed Road in 45-degree heat, the Hyundai Sonata 2021 is the kind of car that doesn't wear you out, and that quiet competence is why it's an easy midsize sedan to rent in Dubai. You can take it from 18, where most rental desks insist on 21, and we'll bring it to your door. This is a full-size saloon on a sensible budget: a long cabin, a deep boot, a 2.0-litre engine that sips rather than shouts, and suspension tuned for comfort over corners. The argument is plain. If you want space and a relaxed drive for the money, the Sonata delivers. If you want sharp handling or anything off the tarmac, look elsewhere, and we'll say where.
The Sonata is at its best eating motorway miles. On the E11 it's quiet, stable, and content to cruise all day, with a suspension bias toward comfort that soaks up the broken patches that jar firmer cars. For a business traveller doing meetings and airport pickups, or a couple touring the emirates, that calm is worth more than a sharper chassis. The cabin is genuinely long, and rear legroom is among the best in the class, so three adults across the back is a real proposition rather than a polite fiction.
What it isn't, and doesn't pretend to be, is quick. The 2.0-litre four makes 150 hp through an automatic, reaching 100 km/h in around 10.6 seconds. That's fine for keeping pace and merging, but a hard overtake at speed has the engine working. If pace is the point, a turbo saloon suits you better.
The boot is around 480 to 510 litres, which is a lot for the class. Two large hard cases plus a couple of cabin bags go in without a fight, with room left for the soft stuff that always appears on the way home. A DXB or DWC run with a full car and luggage is no drama, where a smaller sedan would have you stacking bags on a lap. The opening is wide and the floor is flat, so awkward shapes load easily. If your week involves the airport or a family with gear, the boot alone makes the case.

The 2.0-litre is the frugal half of the appeal. On a mixed week of city errands and highway runs, expect somewhere around 8 to 9 litres per 100 km in real Dubai conditions with the AC working hard. With the 60-litre tank, that's a realistic 650 to 750 km between fills, so one stop, maybe two, across a full week. It's a big car that doesn't drink like one, which is the quiet reason it pencils out as good value.
Left in an open lot at midday a Sonata gets brutally hot, the same as anything else here. What matters is recovery, and the AC is up to it. The front vents pull hard, and the long cabin cools to comfortable within a few minutes of driving rather than leaving you sweating to the first junction. Rear passengers get their own vents at the back of the centre console, which counts when there are kids in the back on a 45-degree afternoon.
At 4.9 metres the Sonata is a proper midsize car, so tight multi-storey bays and a Marina ramp ask for a little care. Light steering and a clear reversing camera make it easier than the length suggests, and you settle into judging it within a day. Ground clearance is low at roughly 145 mm, normal for a saloon, so take aggressive speed bumps slowly and skip the kerbs and sandy tracks. This car is built for tarmac. One housekeeping note: Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental fall to the renter, and seatbelts are mandatory in every seat.
Rent the Sonata 2021 if you want space and comfort for the money: a business traveller after a quiet saloon for meetings and airport runs, or a family needing a real boot and a roomy back seat. On those terms it's one of the better value midsize cars we hand over, and rent-from-18 brings it within reach of younger drivers. Skip it if you're a solo driver doing short city hops, where a smaller sedan is cheaper to run and far easier to park. And if your plan includes Hatta passes or rough ground, the low clearance rules it out, so size up to a midsize SUV. For comfortable, frugal miles on Dubai's roads with luggage aboard, though, the Sonata is hard to argue with.
