Hyundai SONATA 2021 - start from 171 AED / day

We can have the Hyundai Sonata 2021 at your door in Dubai inside one to two hours, which is part of why it books well with people who want a full-size saloon without the full-size rate. This is a comfortable, roomy midsize sedan that covers a Dubai week cheaply: a big boot, a long cabin, settled highway manners, and a 2.0-litre engine that sips rather than shouts. It's a value car, and a good one. The argument here is simple. If you want space and an easy drive for the money, the Sonata earns its keep. If you want a sharp, quick saloon or you're heading off paved roads, this isn't your car, and we'll say why below.

Who this Sonata actually suits

Think of a small family in town for a week, or one or two people doing a run of business meetings and airport pickups. The Sonata fits that life well. The cabin is genuinely long, rear legroom is some of the best in the class, and three adults across the back seat is a real proposition rather than a polite fiction. Add a quiet ride and light controls, and you have a car that doesn't tire you out on a 40-minute crawl down Sheikh Zayed Road in the heat.

What it isn't: fast, and not pretending to be. The 2.0-litre four makes 150 horsepower through a 6-speed automatic, and it gets to 100 km/h in about 10.6 seconds. That's fine for keeping up with traffic and merging onto the E11. Push for a hard overtake at speed and you'll feel the engine work for it. If quick is what you're after, look at the turbo Sonata or a different saloon. For most renters, the relaxed delivery suits the car's whole character.

Boot space and the airport question

The trunk holds around 510 litres, which is a lot for this class. In plain terms, two large hard cases plus a couple of cabin bags go in without a fight, and there's room left for the soft stuff that always appears on the way home. A DXB or DWC run with a full car and luggage is no drama, where a smaller sedan would have you stacking bags on a lap. The opening is wide and the load floor is flat, so awkward shapes load easily.

This is the Sonata's strongest practical case. If your week involves the airport, a family with gear, or shopping that doesn't quit, the boot alone justifies the choice.

Fuel and how often you'll stop

The 2.0-litre is the frugal half of the Sonata's appeal. On a mixed week of city errands and highway runs, expect somewhere around 8 to 9 litres per 100 km in real Dubai conditions, with the AC working hard. With the 60-litre tank, that's a realistic 650 to 750 km between fills. For most renters that means one stop, maybe two, across a full week. It's a big car that doesn't drink like one, which is the quiet reason it pencils out as good value.

Heat, AC, and the parked-car problem

A Sonata left in an open lot at midday gets brutally hot, the same as anything else here. What matters is recovery, and the AC is up to the job. The front vents pull hard, and the long cabin cools to comfortable in a few minutes of driving rather than leaving you sweating to the first junction. Rear passengers get their own vents at the back of the centre console, which counts when there are kids in the back on a 45-degree afternoon.

Driving it around Dubai

At 4.9 metres long the Sonata is a proper midsize car, so tight multi-storey bays and a Marina ramp ask for a bit of care. Light steering and a clear reversing camera make parking easier than the length suggests, and you settle into judging it within a day. Ground clearance is low at roughly 145 mm, which is normal for a saloon, so take the aggressive speed bumps slowly and don't go hunting for kerbs or sandy tracks. This car is built for tarmac and nothing else.

Where it shines is the open road. On Sheikh Zayed Road the Sonata is quiet, stable, and happy to cruise all day. The suspension leans toward comfort and soaks up the rough patches that jar stiffer cars. That bias is the trade for sporty handling, and for the driving most renters do here, it's the right call. One housekeeping note: Salik tolls run up as you pass the gantries and come back to you, RTA fines during the rental are the renter's responsibility too, and seatbelts are mandatory in every seat.

The recommendation

Rent the Sonata if you want space and comfort for the money: a family needing a real boot and a roomy back seat, or a business traveller who wants an easy, quiet saloon for meetings and airport runs. On those terms it's one of the better value midsize cars we hand over. Skip it if you're a solo driver doing short city hops, where a smaller sedan is cheaper to run and far easier to park. And if your plan includes Hatta passes, desert tracks, or rough ground, the low clearance rules the Sonata out. Size up to a midsize SUV instead. For comfortable, frugal miles on Dubai's roads with luggage on board, though, this one's hard to argue with.
