Hyundai SONATA 2021 - start from 167 AED / day

Park a Hyundai Sonata 2021 outside a Dubai hotel and people assume you spent more than you did. We hand this midsize sedan over across Dubai with payment kept flexible and settled on delivery, so there's no scramble before you drive. The eighth-generation Sonata is the value play for anyone who wants a saloon that looks the part without the saloon price: low, wide, sharply creased bodywork, a long cabin, and a boot that swallows a real airport load. This page is for the renter weighing whether a striking, comfort-led sedan is the right call, or whether a smaller car or a midsize SUV would serve them better.

A sedan that reads more expensive than it is

The 2021 redesign is the reason this car turns heads. The grille runs wide, the roofline drops toward the back like a coupe, and a chrome strip traces up into the A-pillar. From the kerb it looks like something from a class above, and that's most of why people pick it over a plainer rival in the same bracket. You get the presence of a premium saloon at the rate of a sensible one, which matters if you're meeting clients, collecting family from the airport, or just want the week's car to feel like an occasion.

The trade-off is honest: this is a car built to look good and ride well, not to thrill. The 2.0-litre engine makes 150 horsepower through a six-speed automatic to the front wheels. That's enough for confident, relaxed driving and easy overtakes at legal speeds. It is not quick, and the swept roofline costs a little rear headroom for tall passengers. If you want pace, this isn't the variant for it.

Will my cases fit, and how often will I refuel

The boot is the quiet strength here. At around 510 litres it takes two large suitcases and a couple of soft bags without a fight, which is rare in this price bracket and the main reason it works for airport runs to DXB or DWC. A family of four can pack for a week and still see out the back window. The low boot lip and wide opening make loading easy in a multi-storey at the terminal.

On fuel, the 2.0-litre is steady rather than thirsty. The 60-litre tank gives genuine touring range, and on a normal Dubai week of mixed driving you'll fill up roughly once. Expect higher consumption in stop-and-start city crawl with the AC working hard, and noticeably better numbers once you're cruising. For a midsize sedan doing school runs, mall trips and the odd highway stretch, you won't be living at the pump.

Highway manners and the summer cabin

On Sheikh Zayed Road this is where the Sonata earns its keep. It settles at a cruise, stays quiet, soaks up expansion joints, and the long wheelbase keeps it planted in crosswinds past the towers. Overtaking takes a moment of patience because the engine prefers smoothness to urgency, but at the speeds that matter on the E11 it's composed and easy to place. Long airport transfers pass without the cabin wearing you down.

Heat is the real Dubai test, and a dark cabin parked in July sun gets brutal. The AC pulls a baked interior down to comfortable within a few minutes of driving, faster if you crack the windows for the first stretch to dump the trapped heat. There are rear vents, so back-seat passengers and children in the second row aren't left to suffer on the way out to the desert or the airport. Park in shade when you can; no system enjoys starting from 60 degrees of dashboard.

A few rules sit with the renter rather than us. Salik tolls run automatically when you pass under a gantry and they're on your account, as are any RTA fines during the rental. Seatbelts are required in every seat, front and back. None of it is complicated; it's just yours to cover.

Parking and city size

This is a long car, close to five metres, so the bays in older multi-storeys and tight Marina basements ask for a bit of care. The turning circle is fine and visibility forward is good, but the high tail and that sloping rear screen mean the reversing camera does real work when you're backing into a snug space. On open mall ramps and standard street parking it's a non-issue. Ground clearance is normal sedan height, so high speed bumps and steep ramp entries want a slow approach to avoid scraping the nose, the usual saloon caveat rather than a flaw.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the Sonata if you want a midsize sedan that looks like money, carries a family and their luggage in comfort, and cruises Dubai's highways without fuss. It's the standout choice for business trips, airport collections, and anyone who values presence and ride quality over outright speed.

Look elsewhere in two cases. If you're solo or a couple darting around the city and squeezing into tight parking daily, a smaller sedan or hatchback is cheaper to run and easier to thread. And if you need five tall adults with full headroom, frequent boot height for bulky gear, or any soft-road ability for Hatta trips, a midsize SUV makes more sense than this low, sleek saloon. For the renter who wants a sharp-looking, roomy, frugal sedan that rents for less than it appears to cost, the Sonata is hard to beat.
