If your Dubai week is mostly highway, the Hyundai Sonata 2020 is a midsize sedan built for exactly that kind of driving. It settles into a long cruise on Sheikh Zayed Road, stays quiet, and carries a family and their luggage in real comfort. We rent it across Dubai with payment kept flexible and settled on delivery, so there's no scramble before you drive off. This is the eighth-generation Sonata, the one with the dramatic redesign, and it's the value play for anyone who wants the presence of a premium saloon at a sensible rate. The decision this page helps with is whether a comfort-first sedan fits your trip, or whether something smaller and cheaper, or a midsize SUV, would suit you better.
On the E11 the Sonata does its best work. The long wheelbase keeps it planted in crosswinds past the towers, it soaks up expansion joints, and the cabin stays calm at speed, so a long airport transfer doesn't wear you down. That's the character to understand before you book. The 2.0-litre petrol makes 150 hp through an automatic to the front wheels, and the source spec puts it at 10.6 seconds to 100. That's relaxed rather than rapid.
Overtaking takes a moment of patience because the engine prefers smoothness to urgency, but at the speeds that matter on Dubai's highways it's composed and easy to place. If you want pace, this isn't the car. If you want to arrive unfrazzled after an hour on the motorway, it is.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Class / body | Economy sedan, 4-door |
| Seats | 5 |
| Engine | 2.0-litre petrol |
| Power | 150 hp |
| Transmission | Automatic |
| Drive | Front-wheel drive |
| 0-100 km/h | 10.6 seconds |
| Fuel economy | roughly 7.5 to 8 L/100 km mixed |
| Fuel tank | 60 litres |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4900 x 1860 x 1445 mm |
| Ground clearance | around 140 mm |
| Boot | around 510 litres |
| Colour | White |
The boot is the quiet strength of this car. At around 510 litres it takes two large suitcases and a couple of soft bags without a fight, which is rare in this bracket and the main reason it works so well for airport runs to DXB or DWC. A family of four can pack for a week and still see out the back window, and the wide opening makes loading easy at a busy terminal.
On fuel, the 2.0-litre is steady. The 60-litre tank gives genuine touring range, and on a normal Dubai week of mixed driving you'll fill up about once. Expect thirstier numbers in stop-start city crawl with the AC at full tilt, and noticeably better ones once you're cruising. The 250 km daily allowance covers the usual round of school runs, mall trips and highway stretches with room to spare.
A dark cabin left in July sun gets brutal, so recovery time is the real test. The Sonata's AC pulls a baked interior down to comfortable within a few minutes of driving, quicker if you crack the windows for the first stretch to let the trapped heat out. There are rear vents, so children in the second row aren't left to suffer on the way out to the airport. Park in shade where you can, because no system enjoys starting from a dashboard sitting at 60 degrees.
This is a long car, close to five metres, so tight bays in older multi-storeys and cramped Marina basements ask for a little care. The turning circle is fine and forward visibility is good, but the high tail and sloping rear screen mean the reversing camera does real work when you back into a snug space. On open mall ramps and normal street parking it's a non-issue. Ground clearance is standard sedan height, so steep ramp entries and high speed bumps want a slow approach to save the nose, which is the usual saloon caveat rather than a fault. A note on the running costs that fall to you: Salik tolls are billed to your account as you pass each gantry, and any RTA fines during the rental are yours to settle.
Rent the Sonata 2020 if your week leans on highway miles and airport transfers, and you want a roomy, comfortable sedan that looks like more than it costs. For business trips, family collections and long motorway stretches, it's the standout pick in its price bracket.
Look elsewhere in two cases. If you're solo or a couple darting around the city and threading tight parking every day, a smaller sedan is cheaper to run and easier to place. And if you need genuine soft-road ability for a Hatta trip or full headroom for five tall adults, a midsize SUV makes more sense than this low, sleek saloon.
