Hyundai Santa Fe 2022 - start from 284 AED / day

Most Dubai families don't need a three-row SUV for the school run, the Friday grocery shop and a Saturday at the mall. What they need is something roomier than a Tucson that doesn't turn every parking bay into a squeeze. That's the gap the Hyundai Santa Fe 2022 rental fills: a genuine mid-size family SUV with more shoulder room and boot than a compact crossover, at a size and running cost well short of a full-size SUV. We can have this Santa Fe at your door within one to two hours of booking, and the mileage allowance is generous enough for a normal week of driving without you watching the odometer. Here's what actually decides whether it's the right size for your week.

Power under the hood, and how it feels on the road

The Santa Fe runs a 2.5-litre naturally aspirated four making 177 hp and 232 Nm, sent to the front wheels through a 6-speed automatic. That's an unremarkable output for a car this size, closer to a family sedan than anything with real urgency, and it shows when you're merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road fully loaded. Give yourself a longer gap than you would in a turbocharged crossover.

Once it's up to speed, though, the cabin settles into a quiet, relaxed cruise a smaller SUV working harder to carry the same load won't quite match. Around town the extra weight over a Tucson barely registers. Steering is light, the automatic shifts smoothly, and the ride shrugs off Dubai's rougher back streets and speed bumps better than a stiffer compact crossover does. Nobody rents this car to feel quick. They rent it because the drivetrain does ordinary things without fuss, which matters more over a week of school runs than a number on a spec sheet.

Boot space, back seat and the school-run week

This is where the Santa Fe separates itself from a Tucson. The boot holds 571 litres with the rear seats up, enough for the school bags, a stroller and a proper mall haul without piling anything on the back seat. Fold the rear bench down and you get 1,649 litres, enough for flatpack furniture or a supermarket run big enough for the whole week in one trip.

The back seat is wide enough for three child seats side by side or two adults with real space between them, which a compact crossover usually can't offer without someone folding their knees up. This is a 5-seat car with no third row, so if the school run regularly means six kids or two families travelling together, it isn't the car. For a household of four or five with the usual daily gear, it sits in the gap between a crossover that's too tight and a three-row SUV you'd rarely fill.

That extra room asks a little more care outside. At 4.785 metres long and 1.9 metres wide, the Santa Fe is noticeably wider than a Tucson, worth remembering on a tight Marina ramp or an older multi-storey bay built before cars this size were common. Ground clearance of about 185 mm clears speed bumps and mall ramps cleanly, but this is a front-wheel-drive SUV on road tyres, not built for soft sand. Keep Hatta and the dunes for something with proper 4x4 hardware.

The mileage allowance, fuel use and cabin heat

Read the mileage terms before you book, not after. This car comes with 2,500 km included for the whole rental, not per day. Book it for a week and that's over 350 km a day on average, plenty for school runs, mall trips and a weekend out of the city. Book two or three weeks instead and the same 2,500 km has to stretch much further, so a longer stay should do the math before assuming the allowance covers the whole trip. Past the limit it's AED 1.0 per extra kilometre, on the higher side for this class, so keep half an eye on the odometer once plans grow past a normal week. Minimum age to rent is 25, above some rivals here, and delivery to your door usually takes one to two hours from booking.

Hyundai's official combined figure is about 7.1 litres per 100 km. Real Dubai driving, with the AC working hard and traffic that rarely flows freely, lands closer to 9 or 10. The 71-litre tank still covers a solid stretch between fills, somewhere around 650 to 750 km depending on how much of the week is stop-start city driving versus open highway. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental fall to the renter, as they do with every car we hand over.

The cabin is bigger than a Tucson's, so it takes a little longer to pull down after sitting closed at 45 degrees, but the front vents work hard once the engine's running and most of the heat clears within a few minutes. Start the engine and give it a short head start before the kids climb back in, and use shade or a covered bay when there's one going.

Who should rent it, and who should look elsewhere

Rent the Santa Fe 2022 if you're a family of four or five who need real boot space and a back seat that fits three car seats or three adults without a fight, but don't need a third row you'd rarely use. It handles the school run, the weekly shop and a weekend out of the city without forcing a compromise on space, and it rides more settled than anything in the compact crossover class.

Look elsewhere if it's just two of you with light bags. A Tucson or a Creta saves you on the daily rate, on fuel and on parking in tighter bays around town. Size up to a proper three-row SUV if your household regularly runs to six or seven, since the Santa Fe stops at five seats with no fold-out extra row, and skip it if Hatta or the dunes are part of the plan, since this front-wheel-drive SUV isn't built for sand. The minimum age here is 25 as well, above some rivals in this class. Within its lane, a mid-size family SUV built for a busy Dubai week, the Santa Fe does the job with room to spare.
