We deliver the Hyundai Santa Cruz 2022 to your door in Dubai within one to two hours, which matters when you've decided on a Friday that Saturday's plan involves bikes, a couple of paddleboards, or a load of gear that won't go in a normal boot. This is the rare rental that drives like a crossover and still gives you an open truck bed. If you want car comfort on Sheikh Zayed Road during the week and the freedom to throw dusty kit in the back at the weekend, the Santa Cruz is built for exactly that overlap. The question this page settles is whether that do-both trick suits your trip, or whether you're better off with a proper SUV or a full-size pickup.
Think of it as a Tucson with the rear cargo area swapped for a short open bed. It's a unibody pickup, not a body-on-frame truck, so on the road it feels like a tall crossover rather than a workhorse. Ours is the 2.5-litre, 194 hp version with an eight-speed automatic driving the front wheels. That's enough to merge onto the E11 and overtake without drama, and it settles into a relaxed cruise at highway speed. It is not the 281 hp turbo, so if you want a quick truck, this isn't it. For five days of city driving and weekend runs, the power is honestly plenty.

The open bed is the whole point, so be realistic about it. At roughly 1.2 metres long it's short by pickup standards. Two mountain bikes with front wheels off, a pair of paddleboards, camping kit and a cooler, or a week's worth of sandy desert gear all fit fine. A full sheet of plywood or long building materials don't. The win is that you can hose it out and never worry about wet, dusty kit ending up in the cabin. After a Hatta trip or a desert overnight, that separation is worth a lot.
Inside, it's a five-seater with a cabin that matches a compact crossover. Two adults up front sit comfortably, and the rear bench takes two for a city hop or three at a squeeze for shorter runs. There's a small covered storage area under the rear seats for valuables you don't want in the open bed. For four adults plus airport luggage on a DXB or DWC run, it's tight, and that's where a midsize SUV makes more sense.
At just under five metres it's longer than the hatchbacks most people rent in Dubai, but it parks more easily than its truck looks suggest. Visibility is good, it's no wider than a typical SUV, and it slots into mall and multi-storey bays without the overhang headaches of a full-size pickup. In Marina's tighter ramps you'll be more deliberate than in a small car, but it isn't stressful. Ground clearance of around 218 mm clears speed bumps and steep mall ramps cleanly, so you're not wincing over every hump.
On drivetrain, read this carefully. Our Santa Cruz is front-wheel drive, so it handles graded desert tracks, compacted sand, and beach access roads, but it is not a dune machine. If your plan is serious off-road or soft-sand bashing, rent a proper 4x4 instead. For light desert use, gear hauling, and getting to a campsite on a decent track, it copes well.
Dubai summers push past 45C, and a cabin left in the sun gets brutal. The Santa Cruz's air conditioning pulls a parked cabin down at a sensible pace, and rear vents keep back-seat passengers comfortable on longer drives. Give it a few minutes with the fan high after a midday park and it's livable, which is normal for this class.
On fuel, expect around 10.2 litres per 100 km combined, with city-heavy weeks running thirstier and motorway cruising better. The roughly 68-litre tank gives you close to 600 km between fills in mixed driving, so a typical week of errands and a weekend trip means one or two stops, not a daily ritual. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during your rental pass to you, and seatbelts are mandatory in every seat. A no-deposit option is available if you'd rather not tie up a hold.
Rent the Santa Cruz if you're one or two people, occasionally three or four, who want a comfortable daily driver that doubles as a small truck. It's ideal for active weekends: bikes, boards, dive gear, desert kit, anything you'd rather keep out of the cabin. If you mostly drive in the city all week and head out with gear at the weekend, this is the smart pick that saves you renting two different cars.
Skip it if you regularly carry four or five adults with luggage, where a real SUV gives you the cabin space. And if you're moving long, heavy loads or need genuine towing and off-road muscle, a full-size pickup or a serious 4x4 is the right call. For everyone in between, the Santa Cruz does two jobs well, and that flexibility is why we keep it on the fleet.
