Merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road with a full car takes a bit of forward planning rather than a stab of throttle, since 177 hp is modest for a vehicle this size. Once you're up to speed, though, the cabin settles into a quiet, unstressed cruise. Around town the steering is light, the gearbox is smooth, and the ride soaks up Dubai's speed bumps and rough back streets better than a stiffer, smaller crossover. None of it is exciting. All of it is familiar, which is the point if you just want a car that behaves the same way every day of the rental.

Boot, back seat and packing for a family of four

The boot holds 571 litres with the rear seats up, enough for three or four large suitcases stacked properly rather than wedged in on their sides. Fold the back bench down and that opens out to 1,649 litres, which covers a moving day or a load of sports gear without anyone thinking twice. Mileage is worth checking before you book rather than after. This car comes with 250 km a day included, then AED 0.5 for every kilometre past that, which covers a normal week of commuting, school runs and errands with room to spare for a longer day out. White helps a little with the heat, more than most renters expect.
