Fuel is where the math on a rental week is won or lost, and that's the case the Hyundai Elantra 2023 makes best. We hand it over across Dubai with delivery in one to two hours, and you settle however suits you on the spot: card, cash, Apple Pay or Google Pay, even crypto, with nothing locked behind a single payment wall. What you're renting is a frugal compact sedan that swallows highway kilometres cheaply, which is the whole argument for this car. If your week is long airport runs, daily commutes down Sheikh Zayed Road, and a tank you'd rather fill once than three times, the Elantra earns its keep. This page is about running cost, range, and who should look elsewhere.
The 2.0-litre four returns roughly 6.4 litres per 100 km on a mixed week, closer to 5.6 on a steady highway run and nearer 7 once you're stuck in stop-start traffic at the Trade Centre roundabout. With a 47-litre tank, that's around 700 km of real range before you're hunting for a station, and in practice most renters fill once across a normal week. That matters more than it sounds. A daily 60 km commute plus a couple of airport drops adds up fast, and the cars that drink an extra litre or two per 100 km quietly hand the difference back to the pump. The Elantra doesn't. It's one of the cheaper sedans in this class to feed over high mileage, and the CVT automatic helps by keeping the engine lazy at a cruise rather than spinning it hard.
A note on the economy figures: the official numbers cover a 147 hp engine, so ignore any "150 hp" rounding you might see. Same car, same fuel use.

402 litres is a genuinely useful boot for this size of car, and it's the part most people underestimate. Two large checked cases plus a couple of cabin bags go in flat, which covers a family flying in through DXB or a longer DWC pickup without anyone holding a suitcase on their lap. Push to three big hard cases and four passengers and it gets tight, so size up to a midsize sedan if that's your group. For two adults landing with the usual holiday load, or a single commuter who never opens the boot, there's room to spare. The rear seats fold if you need to carry something longer, which is rare on a rental but handy the one time it isn't.
A car that's sat in 45-degree sun all afternoon is unpleasant for the first few minutes, and that's true of everything on the lot. The Elantra's cabin isn't huge, so the AC pulls it down to comfortable within a couple of minutes of pulling away, and the front vents hit hard. Rear passengers get vents too, which is more than some cheaper sedans in this bracket offer, so the back seat doesn't bake on a school run. Park in shade where you can and it's a non-issue. Park in open sun at the mall and give it a minute before you expect cold air.
On Sheikh Zayed Road the Elantra is comfortable and quiet at a 100 to 120 cruise, and it has enough in reserve to make a clean overtake without drama. Push for hard acceleration and the CVT makes the engine drone, which is the car's honest weak spot. It's a relaxed cruiser, not a quick one, and around 8 seconds to 100 it's adequate rather than eager. The ride is on the firm side over Dubai's expansion joints and speed bumps, fine for most but worth knowing if you want plush. At 4.7 metres long it parks easily in mall and multi-storey bays, the turning circle handles U-turns, and the 135 mm clearance clears standard ramps and bumps without scraping. It's a city-and-highway car, not a soft-roader, so keep it on tarmac.
A quick operational note: Salik tolls and any RTA fines run on the renter's account, not ours, and seatbelts are mandatory in every seat with child seats required for under-fours. Plan the gate crossings and you'll know your toll spend up front.
Rent the Elantra if your week is high mileage and you care about fuel: the commuter clocking real distance, the visitor doing repeated airport and city runs, the couple or small family who want a comfortable, cheap-to-run sedan with a proper boot. It's one of the most sensible long-range picks in the economy class.
Look elsewhere in two cases. If you're four adults with a full set of hard cases, size up to a midsize sedan for the rear room and boot you'll actually use. And if you're doing short, low-mileage city hops and only care about the lowest possible rate, a smaller basic sedan or hatch will cost less to rent and you'll never notice the Elantra's range advantage. For everyone covering serious distance, this is the one to book.
