Hyundai Elantra 2022 - start from 118 AED / day

The sharp creases down the doors and that low, wide grille are why people stop and look at the Hyundai Elantra 2022, and they're the first reason it rents so well in Dubai. We hand this one to drivers from age 18, while most of the market won't put you behind the wheel of a sedan until 21. So if you want something that photographs like a car a class above what you're paying for, this is the compact sedan to start with. The real question this page settles is simple: is the Elantra enough car for your week, or should you size up? For most city driving and airport runs, it is.

A compact that wears a midsize suit

The styling is the headline here, and it earns it. The Elantra 2022 looks longer and more planted than its segment, and at 4676 mm long it actually is stretched for a compact. That length pays off inside. Rear-seat knee room is genuinely good for the class, so two adults in the back on a Dubai Marina to Downtown run aren't folded in. Three across the rear works for short hops, less so for a full day out.

The flip side of the dramatic roofline is headroom. At 56 inches tall the cabin is low, and a taller passenger in the back will brush the headliner. Worth knowing before you load four adults plus a driver for an airport pickup.

A note on the engine: Hyundai sells the Elantra with hybrid and high-output N versions abroad, but the car you rent here is the 2.0L petrol. The hybrid's 20-plus km/L figures don't apply to this rental, so I've quoted the petrol numbers throughout.

The engine is fine, not thrilling

Here's where honesty matters. The 147 HP 2.0L paired with the CVT is smooth and quiet around town, exactly what you want crawling along Sheikh Zayed Road in evening traffic. Ask it to overtake quickly at 100-plus on the E11 and the CVT lets the revs flare before much happens. It gets the job done, but it doesn't shove you into the seat.

The ride is on the firmer side. Over Dubai's good asphalt that reads as composed and grown-up. Over the sharper speed bumps in older communities you'll feel them. The 135 mm ground clearance is normal sedan height, so mall ramps and multi-storey entries are no drama, but don't take it off a paved road.

How often you'll actually stop for fuel

The 46.9 L tank and that real-world 13.5 to 14 km/L mean a tank covers most of a week of normal city driving. Plan on one fill for a typical Dubai week of errands, dinners, and a couple of airport runs to DXB. Push it hard on the highway daily and you'll refuel sooner, but the Elantra is genuinely easy on fuel for its size. Petrol here is cheap, so the savings are modest, but you'll spend less time at the pump than you would in a thirstier crossover.

Heat, parking, and the Dubai basics

In a June afternoon when a parked cabin has been baking at 45 degrees, the Elantra's AC pulls it down to comfortable in a few minutes. Front vents blow strong and there are rear vents too, so back-seat passengers aren't suffering on the school run. Park in shade and crack the windows for ten seconds before you set off if you can.

Parking is easy. The car feels big in photos but slots into standard bays without fuss, the turning circle is tight enough for Marina U-turns, and the rear camera takes the guesswork out of tight multi-storey spaces.

A few rental basics worth stating plainly. Salik tolls run on your account, so every gate you pass through gets billed to the rental. Any RTA fines during your hire pass to you as well. Seatbelts are mandatory in every seat, front and back, and a child seat is required for under-fours.

Does your luggage fit

The boot is around 402 L, which is large for a compact and one of the Elantra's quiet strengths. Two large suitcases plus a couple of soft bags fit for a family arriving at the airport. Three big hard cases is the limit before someone's bag rides on a back seat. For a couple or a small family doing a DXB or DWC run, the boot is more than enough.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the Elantra 2022 if you want a striking, well-equipped sedan that looks more expensive than it is, with a roomy back seat, a big boot, and easy running costs for a week of city driving and airport runs. For drivers from 18 who want something sharper than a basic economy sedan, it's the obvious pick.

Size up to a Hyundai Sonata if you regularly carry four adults who'll want the headroom, or if you spend most of your week overtaking on the highway and want real punch. And if looks don't matter to you and you only need to get from A to B as cheaply as possible, a plainer economy sedan will save you a little more. For everyone in between, the Elantra hits the sweet spot.
