We hand over the Hyundai Elantra 2021 across Dubai with 250 km a day built into the rate, which is enough to cover a week of school runs, mall trips and a couple of airport runs without watching the odometer. This is the roomy, frugal end of the compact-sedan bracket: a big boot, a back seat adults can actually sit in, and an easy automatic drive that asks nothing of you in traffic. If you want a comfortable family-and-airport car that sips fuel and parks without drama, this is the one to look at. It's comfort-led, not sporty, and the cabin is plain inside, so read on before you decide.
Most cars in the economy bracket make you choose between rear legroom and a usable boot. The Elantra gives you both. Two adults up front and two kids behind have room to spare, and even a third adult in the middle for a short hop across town is doable rather than a punishment. The seats are soft and the ride is settled, so an hour each way to Hatta or out past the airport doesn't leave anyone aching.
The flip side of that comfort is honesty about character. The 2.0-litre is smooth and quiet at cruising speed, but it's tuned for ease, not pace. Plant your foot to overtake on Sheikh Zayed Road and it gets the job done without much theatre. The plastics on the dash and doors are plain, hard in places, and clearly built to a price. None of that matters on a rental you're keeping for a week. It only matters if you were expecting a premium feel, and you shouldn't.
The 402-litre boot is the reason this car earns its keep for arrivals and departures. Two large suitcases go in flat with room for a couple of soft bags or a pushchair on top. A family of four heading to the terminal with a week's luggage fits without anyone holding a bag on their lap. For four adults each with a full case it gets tight, and you'd size up to a midsize sedan or an SUV. The boot lip is low, so loading at the kerb at DXB or out at DWC is quick.

The economy here is the quiet selling point. A combined 6.4 L/100 km is genuinely frugal for a five-seat sedan, and in mixed Dubai driving, school run plus a daily commute on the highway, you'll see something close to that as long as you're not sitting in stop-start gridlock with the AC on full. On a 47-litre tank that works out to roughly 700 km between fills in real conditions, so most renters get through a week of normal use on a single tank or thereabouts. Fewer petrol stops is one less errand on a family week.
Park it in the sun in July and the cabin will be brutal for the first minute, same as any car here. The Elantra's AC is strong for the class and the cabin isn't large, so it pulls the temperature down fast once you're moving, and there are rear vents to keep kids in the back comfortable rather than wilting. Crank it to max for the first couple of minutes, then settle it, and a parked-in-45C cabin is liveable within a kilometre or two.
A few Dubai rules to keep in mind. Salik tolls are billed to you as the renter, and any RTA fines during your rental period pass to you as well, so stick to the limits on the highway cameras. Seatbelts are required in every seat, and children under four need a proper child seat, which we can add on request.
The 135 mm of ground clearance is normal sedan height, fine for speed bumps and mall ramps if you take the steep ones at a sensible angle, but this is a road car and nothing more. Keep it on tarmac. At 1,826 mm wide it slots into tight multi-storey bays and handles Marina U-turns without a three-point shuffle, and the light steering makes parking effortless.
Rent the Elantra if you're a family or a couple who want space, low running costs and an easy drive for a week of city errands and airport runs. It's the sensible-value pick in this class, and the big boot plus the frugal engine are what set it apart from the smaller cars next to it.
Skip it if you're carrying four adults with full luggage regularly, in which case a midsize sedan or an SUV gives you the room you'll actually use. Skip it too if it's only ever you, solo, nipping around the Marina and into tight parking, because a hatchback is cheaper and even easier to place. But for the family week with a flight at either end, the Elantra is the comfortable, frugal sedan that just works.
