Rent Hyundai Elantra 2020 in Dubai

Most Dubai fleets hold the line at 25 for a mid-size sedan. The Hyundai Elantra 2020 is one of the exceptions on our lot: we rent it from age 21, which matters if you're a younger resident or a visiting driver who keeps hitting that wall everywhere else. Take the age out of it and it's still a straightforward case: a comfortable white automatic four-door with a proper boot, happy on Sheikh Zayed Road and just as happy on the school run. We deliver it to your door within one to two hours of booking. Here's what the Elantra 2020 is actually good at, and where a younger renter in particular should look elsewhere.

The 2.0 four-cylinder and the 6-speed auto

This generation of Elantra runs a 2.0-litre four-cylinder petrol engine making around 159 hp and 191 Nm, sent through a genuine 6-speed torque-converter automatic rather than the CVT that Hyundai fits to the newer cars. In practice that means a shift you can feel, not the rubber-band feel some drivers dislike in a CVT. It's front-wheel drive only, so there's no case for taking it off tarmac.

On Sheikh Zayed Road it settles into a calm, quiet cruise and holds 120 km/h without strain. Where it shows its age is a full-throttle overtake at highway speed: 0 to 100 km/h takes close to ten seconds, so a loaded car with four adults wants the gap planned a beat earlier than you'd plan it in something newer. Around town, in the stop-start of Marina or Downtown traffic, none of that matters. The gearbox is smooth and the car never feels like it's working hard.

What fits: the boot, the back seat, a normal week

The boot holds 408 litres, enough for two large suitcases and a carry-on without wrestling the lid shut, so an airport pickup for two isn't a problem. The back seat takes two adults in genuine comfort for a Dubai-length drive, less so a third across the middle for anything beyond a quick hop. If your week regularly means four adults, full cases and a beach bag on top, this car is tighter than it looks from the outside.

At just over 4.6 metres long and 1.8 metres wide, it slots into a standard multi-storey bay without a three-point turn, and the turning circle handles a Marina ramp U-turn cleanly. Around 135 mm of clearance shrugs off ordinary speed bumps and the ramps at most malls. Steep basement entries or the sharper compound humps out past the newer developments are the one place to slow down and take the angle straight rather than at speed.

Fuel bills, Salik and cooling a white cabin

Fuel economy sits around 13.5 km/l on the 2.0-litre, and with a 50-litre tank that's roughly 650 km before the gauge gets serious, so a normal week of commuting and errands means one stop, not several. The rental includes 250 km a day, and anything past that costs AED 0.5 per extra kilometre, a rate low enough that a longer day trip out of the city won't wreck the budget. Salik tolls and any RTA fines are yours to cover, standard for any rental here and worth a mental note if your daily route crosses a toll gate.

A car left in a parking lot through a Dubai afternoon heats up fast, and this cabin is on the smaller side, which actually helps: less air for the AC to fight. The front vents pull the temperature down within the first minute or so of getting back in, and rear passengers get their own vents too, so a full car isn't waiting on the two up front to cool everyone down. Crack the windows for a few seconds before you climb in if it's been parked a while; it clears the worst of the trapped heat before the AC has to do the rest.

Who this Elantra fits at 21, and who should look elsewhere

Book the Hyundai Elantra 2020 if you're 21 to 24 and have been turned away elsewhere for a comfortable automatic sedan, or if you simply want a reliable four-door for commuting, airport runs and weekend errands without paying SUV money. Two adults and a full boot's worth of luggage are well within its comfort zone, and the ride and cabin cooling both hold up to a proper Dubai week.

Look elsewhere if you regularly carry four adults with full luggage, or if any part of your plan involves sand tracks or Hatta; this is a front-wheel-drive sedan with modest clearance, not a car built for either. And if quick overtakes at speed matter to you, the older six-speed automatic is willing but not fast, so budget an extra second or two before you pull out. For the use it's built for, city driving, highway cruising and a genuine back seat, it does the job without drama.
