Hyundai Accent 2023 - start from 118 AED / day

First time driving in Dubai, or just want a car that won't intimidate you in traffic? The Hyundai Accent 2023 is the easy-going compact sedan we hand to a lot of newer drivers, and you can rent it from 18 with a no-deposit plan, so nothing freezes on your card while you find your feet. It even comes in real colours rather than the usual rental grey, with options from Frost White Pearl to Pomegranate Red on the books. Our take is simple: the Accent is the low-stress pick for someone who wants a forgiving, cheap-to-run car for the city, the commute, and the odd airport run, and doesn't need to impress anyone. If you want pace or a plush cabin, read to the end, because this isn't that car.

Easy to drive, easy to park

The reason this car suits a nervous or new driver is how little it asks of you. The steering is light, the controls are obvious, and at 4.44 metres it's short enough to place in a tight multi-storey bay or thread through the Marina without a second attempt. U-turns and parallel spots are simple, and the 160 mm of ground clearance clears Dubai's speed bumps and mall ramps without scraping.

The 6-speed automatic does the thinking in stop-and-go traffic, which is most of what city driving here actually is. There's no fuss to learn and no edge to catch you out. You stop thinking about the car within an hour, which for a first rental is exactly what you want.

Running cost you barely notice

The 1.6-litre four-cylinder is naturally aspirated and unfussy, and it sips fuel in normal use. Reckon on 12.0 to 12.5 km per litre in city driving, better once you're cruising the E11 at a steady speed. With the 45-litre tank that's a real range of roughly 540 km around town and well past 700 on the highway, so most renters fill up once across a week, twice if they're commuting daily from the outer communities. For someone watching the budget on a first trip, that's one less thing to think about, and you'll rarely brush the 250 km a day your rental includes.

Boot and back seat: does your luggage fit

For a compact sedan the Accent carries more than it looks like it should. The boot takes two large 23 kg suitcases lying flat, then a couple of smaller bags tucked in around them, which is a genuine four-person airport load from DXB or DWC without anything on laps. That alone puts it ahead of the budget hatches at a similar rate.

Inside, five seats fit five at a push and four in comfort. Rear legroom is decent for the class, so an adult behind an adult isn't a punishment on a short run. The cabin is plain, hard plastics and a simple screen, the basics done properly. Nothing pretends to be premium, and at this rate that's a fair deal.

Heat, cooling, and the Dubai rules

Park it in a Dubai summer and it bakes like anything here, but the small cabin works in your favour. The AC has less air to chill than a big SUV, so the front vents pull the temperature down to comfortable within a few minutes of driving. Don't expect rear vents or climate zones at this level, but for one or two people up front it cools quickly.

A few rules pass straight to you as the renter, none of them Accent-specific: Salik tolls are billed to you, RTA fines land on you, seat belts are mandatory in every seat, and a child seat is required by law for under-fours, which we can fit on request.

Where it runs short

The 121 hp is enough, not generous. Around the city and at a steady highway cruise it's relaxed and quiet, but ask for a hard overtake above 100 km/h with four people and luggage aboard and you'll hear the engine working before the speed climbs. For commuting and airport runs that never matters. For a week of fast motorway driving, it's a limit worth knowing.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the Accent 2023 if you want a simple, forgiving, cheap-to-run sedan for city life, commuting, or a family visit, especially if you're a newer driver or renting from 18 and would rather not lock up a deposit. It's the low-stress choice, with a boot bigger than the hatchbacks at the same rate and a colour list that isn't all grey.

Step up to an Elantra if the plain cabin and modest punch will bother you, or if you'll spend most of the week overtaking on the highway. Drop to a basic budget hatch only if you're barely driving and want the lowest possible rate. For a confident, no-drama week behind the wheel in Dubai, this is the one we'd start you on.
