What you're actually renting

This is the 1.5-litre turbo Accord with a CVT automatic and front-wheel drive. Honda rates the engine at 192 horsepower, which is more than enough for a sedan this size. It pulls cleanly away from lights, settles into a hush at a cruise, and never feels like it's working hard. Around town the CVT is smooth and unobtrusive. Push for a sudden overtake on the E11 and it drones a little before the speed arrives, but that's the only time you notice it. For airport runs, long commutes, and weekend drives out of the city, the powertrain is well judged.

Space, and whether your luggage fits

The Accord's case is space. At just under five metres long with a 2.83-metre wheelbase, it gives rear passengers proper legroom, three adults across the back without anyone complaining on a 40-minute drive. The boot is 473 litres, which in plain terms means two large hard cases plus a couple of soft bags, or a full family's worth of luggage for a DXB or DWC airport run with room to spare. Heat and the cabin at 45 degrees

Dubai's summer is the real test, and the Accord handles it well. The AC is strong and pulls a baking, parked cabin down to comfortable inside a few minutes, helped by rear vents that keep back-seat passengers cool on a long drive. Park in shade where you can and the first blast of cold air arrives faster, but even after hours in open sun the system recovers quickly. Driving it around the city

A near-five-metre sedan is longer than a compact, so tight multi-storey bays and the odd Marina ramp ask for a bit more care, and the turning circle is what you'd expect from a car this length on a U-turn. The 147 mm ground clearance is normal sedan height, fine for the city's speed bumps and mall ramps taken at sensible speed, but this is a road car and not something to take off the tarmac. Where it shines is the open road. On Sheikh Zayed Road it tracks straight and stays quiet at a cruise, which is where the long wheelbase earns its keep on a DXB or DWC run.

A couple of Dubai practicalities to keep in mind. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during your rental are the renter's responsibility, so the gate beeps and speed limits are on you. Seat belts are required in every seat, and children under four need a child seat, which we can arrange.

Who should rent it, and who shouldn't

Rent the Accord 2022 if you want a roomy, refined sedan for the week and you'd rather put the saving from the older model year toward more days or a better trip. It's the value pick in the midsize class: nearly all the space and polish of the newer car for less. Choose it for family airport runs, long highway drives, and carrying four adults in comfort.

If your week is mostly tight city parking and short errands, a compact sedan is easier to thread and cheaper still. And if outright ride comfort is your single priority over everything else, the Toyota Camry leans softer and more cosseting, though it gives up a little of the Accord's composure when the road turns.
