The engine, and how it drives

The Dargo runs a 2.0-litre turbocharged four making 192 hp and 320 Nm, sent through a 7-speed dual-clutch automatic to all four wheels. That's a real step up from the 1.5-litre naturally aspirated engines most compact SUVs in this class come with, and you feel it merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road. The turbo pulls cleanly from low revs, so getting past a truck doesn't mean flooring it and hoping. Haval quotes 9.7 seconds to 100 km/h, quick enough that you're never the car holding up the lane.

The 4WD is real hardware, not a badge. There's a locking centre differential and a locking rear diff, plus Sand, Mud and Snow drive modes, which puts the Dargo ahead of most rivals its size on paper. Treat that as insurance for a graded Hatta track or a flooded car park after rain, not a licence to head for the dunes. The tyres are road-biased 235/60R19s, and the ride starts to pitch if you push it hard through a corner. This is a genuinely capable crossover, not a Patrol replacement.

Boot, back seat and the daily use

Haval doesn't publish an official boot figure for the Dargo, which is unusual for the class and worth knowing before you plan a trip around it. The back seat is the pleasant surprise. Knee room and headroom are genuinely good for a coupe-SUV, enough that four adults and a child can do a week of errands without anyone complaining on the ride back from the airport. Running cost, heat and the cabin

Official combined economy is 10.9 L/100km, and the 60-litre tank gives a real-world range close to 450 to 500 km once Dubai traffic and a hard-working AC are factored in. That's thirstier than a compact hatchback but reasonable for a turbocharged 4WD SUV. Budget for a fuel stop every four or five days of normal use.

Mileage is the number to check before you book. You get 250 km a day included, and anything past that costs AED 0.5 per extra kilometre, so a day out to Hatta and back is worth adding up first. Salik tolls and any RTA fines during the rental are yours to cover, and under-fours need a child seat by law. You can take the keys from 21, which matters if a younger driver in the group has been turned away elsewhere for being under 25.

The cabin runs dual-zone air conditioning, and with a mid-size footprint it doesn't take long to pull down from a car park bake in August. The front vents do the early work, so give it three or four minutes with the doors shut before everyone climbs in. The back seat catches up quickly enough that nobody's complaining by the time you're on the highway.

Who should rent it, and who should look elsewhere

Rent the Dargo if you want a compact SUV with real 4WD hardware behind the badge, you like the coupe styling more than a boxier rival, and you're under 25 and tired of being quoted a higher age bracket elsewhere. It's quick enough for Sheikh Zayed Road, capable enough for a rough Hatta track, and roomy enough in the back seat for four adults on a normal week.

Look elsewhere if boot space is your main worry. Without a published litre figure from Haval, we'd rather point a family doing a big airport run toward something like the Outlander, where the number is confirmed. And if the plan genuinely involves dunes rather than graded tracks, road tyres and a locking diff aren't a substitute for a proper off-roader.
