Ask around Dubai's rental desks about a big three-row SUV and the reflex answer is a Nissan Patrol or a Land Cruiser. The GMC Yukon 2023 is a different kind of large SUV: American underpinnings, a genuinely usable third row, and a character built more for cruising than for dune runs. What this page settles is whether that trade, more road manners and real third-row space for less desert ability, actually suits your week here, or whether the badge you already know is still the right call.

The engine, and how it drives

Under the hood is GM's 5.3-litre V8, rated at 355 hp and 519 Nm of torque, paired with a ten-speed automatic and four-wheel drive. GM markets that system as 4WD rather than all-wheel drive, and it runs a genuine transfer case, not a badge dressed up for marketing. The V8 moves close to two and a half tonnes without strain, so merging onto Sheikh Zayed Road or passing a truck near the airport takes one press of the pedal rather than a downshift and a wait.

This generation also switched to independent rear suspension, replacing the old live axle, and it is the difference you actually feel. The ride stays settled over expansion joints and speed bumps in a way older Yukons, and current Patrols still running a live rear axle, do not quite manage. That is the trade at the center of this comparison. The Patrol's low-range gearing and locking differentials are built for dunes and rutted tracks, while the Yukon's engineering went into comfort and stability on tarmac. Four-wheel drive here handles a graded track or a firm beach road without drama, but treat it as a comfort feature, not a Hatta tool. If dune bashing is the actual plan, rent the Patrol instead.

Seats, boot and the honest cargo trade-off

This is the standard-length Yukon, not the longer XL, and it seats seven with two captain's chairs in the middle row, or eight if you ask for the bench version. The third row is where the size actually pays off. Most three-row SUVs hand you a back bench a child tolerates for twenty minutes and an adult resents for two hours. The Yukon's independent rear suspension frees up real foot room back there, so adults can sit through a full airport run or a highway push to Abu Dhabi without folding their knees up.

Luggage is the part to be honest about. Behind the third row you get 722 litres, enough for a full set of airport bags without folding a seat, and more than a Patrol offers in the same position. Fold the third row and that grows to roughly 2,056 litres, and drop the middle row too and you are close to 3,480. The trade-off every three-row SUV eventually hits still applies here: seven people and seven full-size cases at once will have you tucking soft bags into footwells. If that is your regular load, the longer Yukon XL carries meaningfully more behind its third row. For six to eight people with normal luggage, the standard length here is the right size.

A black cabin, fuel and running cost

This one comes in black, and that matters more in August than the colour chart suggests. A dark cabin left closed up in a parking bay through a Dubai afternoon holds heat longer than a lighter interior would, and the dash and seat tops will be genuinely hot to the touch when you get back in. The system handles it once it is running. Front vents pull the temperature down fast, and rear passengers get their own vents, so the third row is not breathing whatever drifts back from the dashboard. Give it a couple of minutes before you expect the whole cabin properly cold, and crack a window before you get back in if you can.

The 5.3-litre V8 carries a combined economy figure of about 13.8 litres per 100 km, and real Dubai city driving with the AC working hard tends to land closer to 16 or 17. The 91-litre tank still buys a decent stretch between stops, but budget fuel as a real cost on a car this size, not an afterthought. Salik tolls and any RTA fines from the rental period are billed to you, not to us.

Size shows up at the parking bay before it shows up at the pump. At 5,331 mm long and 2,057 mm wide, tight multi-storey bays and steep Marina ramps ask for the reversing camera and a bit of patience. Ground clearance of about 203 mm shrugs off speed bumps and mall ramps without a second thought.

Who should rent it, and who should look elsewhere

Rent the GMC Yukon 2023 if you want the Patrol's seating capacity without the Patrol's stiffer, truck-like ride, or if six to eight of you are travelling together with real luggage for a week of highway driving and airport runs. Few vehicles in this bracket pair a third row adults can actually sit in with this much composure at 120 km/h on the E11. If your plan runs through Hatta or actual dunes, the Patrol's low range still wins that argument, and if you need every seat full with every case aboard, ask about the Yukon XL instead. If the badge does not matter and the budget does, a Chevrolet Tahoe covers most of the same ground for less.

Look elsewhere if it is two or three of you without much to carry. A mid-size SUV covers the same errands and mall runs for less fuel and an easier time finding a bay, and you will not miss the two empty rows behind you. Your allowance is 250 km a day, extra kilometres cost AED 0.5 each, and you will need to be at least 25 to collect the keys.
