The other change in this generation sits underneath, where GMC swapped the old solid rear axle for an independent setup. It shows up as a controlled, settled ride over expansion joints and speed bumps rather than the looser motion older Yukons had. None of that makes it a desert tool. Four-wheel drive here is tuned for a graded track, a wet road or firm sand along a beach, not low-range crawling through dunes. If Hatta's steeper trails or an actual dune run are the point of the week, a Nissan Patrol or Land Cruiser with proper low-range gearing will do that job with less drama.

If the GMC badge doesn't matter to you personally, a Chevrolet Tahoe shares the same platform and V8 for less money. If the week is really about dunes rather than a firm graded track, a Nissan Patrol with low-range gearing is the more honest tool for that job, and if you need every seat and every case aboard at once, ask about the longer Yukon XL.

Look elsewhere if it's one or two of you running errands around the city. You'd be parking a five-metre SUV and feeding a V8 for room and range you won't come close to using, and a mid-size crossover covers the same trips for a lot less fuel and an easier time finding a bay.
