Headroom is the compromise. Summer changes the calculation back there too. Salik charges and any RTA fines during the rental are yours. Belts are mandatory in every seat and children under four need a proper child seat.

Road manners, and then the car park

The 2.0-litre turbo makes 238 hp and 350 Nm through an eight-speed automatic, and 6.9 seconds to 100 km/h is quick for the money. What matters day to day is that the torque converter gearbox never shunts or hesitates in crawling traffic, and that overtaking on the E11 needs one squeeze rather than a downshift and a plan.

Parking is where the size shows up, and it is the 1,878 mm width you feel, not the length. Older multi-storey bays leave you opening the door with some care, and the thick rear pillars mean you reverse on the camera rather than over your shoulder. Ride height is not an issue. Sloped mall entrances and the tall speed bumps around residential streets pass underneath without a scrape.

One thing to settle before anyone gets ideas. The Tugella was sold in the UAE in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive versions, and the fleet car is not specified, so we will not promise you either. It changes nothing about how you should use it. The low body and road tyres rule out soft sand whatever is driving the wheels, and a stuck rental in the desert is an expensive afternoon.
