We deliver the Geely Tugella 2024 anywhere in Dubai inside one to two hours, with a no-deposit option and debit cards or cash accepted at the door. That matters more than usual with this car. Most people booking it have never driven a Geely, and plenty of desks want a heavy hold on your card before handing over anything with 238 horsepower. You do not need one here. What you are collecting is a midsize coupe SUV with a Volvo-derived turbo engine, five seats and a hard-sloping roofline. That roofline is the whole argument of this page, because it decides how much of your luggage comes with you.
Geely owns Volvo, and the Tugella is built on the same CMA platform that sits under the Volvo XC40. The 2.0-litre turbocharged four-cylinder comes from that same engineering family, and it makes 238 hp and 350 Nm through an Aisin eight-speed automatic. Zero to 100 km/h takes 6.9 seconds. That is quicker than a lot of German crossovers costing twice the daily rate, and it is genuinely unusual at this end of the price list.
How it delivers matters more than the number. Torque comes in early and stays flat, so pulling out to overtake at 120 on the E11 takes one squeeze of the throttle without the gearbox hunting for a lower gear. The eight-speed is a conventional torque-converter automatic rather than a dual-clutch, so you get none of the low-speed shunting cheaper crossovers give you when creeping off a line. On a packed Sheikh Zayed Road that shows up every day of the rental.
One honest caveat before you book on the badge. The UAE Tugella has been sold in both front-wheel drive and all-wheel drive forms depending on the version, and the fleet car you receive is not specified. Treat it as a fast road car. Nobody should be taking this down a sand track in either case, because the low-slung bodywork and road tyres decide that question long before the axles do.
| Spec | Geely Tugella 2024 |
|---|---|
| Body | Midsize coupe SUV, 5 seats |
| Engine | 2.0-litre turbocharged petrol |
| Power | 238 hp |
| Torque | 350 Nm |
| Transmission | 8-speed automatic |
| 0 to 100 km/h | 6.9 seconds |
| Fuel economy | 7.1 L/100km combined |
| Fuel tank | 54 litres |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4605 x 1878 x 1643 mm |
| Wheelbase | 2700 mm |
| Boot | 326 litres |
The boot holds 326 litres. In a car that is 4.6 metres long, that is a small number, and it is the price of the styling. For comparison, the Geely Coolray, a subcompact crossover from two size classes below, has a boot of 330 litres. You are renting a midsize SUV with a small crossover's luggage space.
In practical terms, a DXB or DWC pickup with two large hard cases will fill the space and leave you stacking soft bags on the rear seat. A couple with a case each and a week of shopping is fine. Four people flying in for a holiday are not. Fold the rear bench and there is plenty of room for bulky or flat items, but the load height is limited by that tapering tailgate, so tall boxes go in at an angle or not at all.
The roofline takes something off the back seats too. Legroom is good, because the 2700 mm wheelbase is generous and a six-foot passenger sits comfortably behind a six-foot driver. Headroom is where the shape bites. Anyone over about 1.85 metres will feel the rear header rail close to their scalp on a longer run. Two adults in the back are comfortable, three across is a squeeze for width as much as anything.
For parking, the length is manageable and the 1878 mm width is what you notice. Older tower and mall car parks have bays that leave you opening the door carefully, and the thick rear pillars mean you lean on the camera when reversing rather than the mirror. It rides high enough to clear the aggressive speed bumps around residential clusters and sloped mall entrances without scraping.
Two running costs are yours during the rental. Salik tolls and any RTA fines pass to you, so daily gantry crossings add up. Seat belts are required in every seat and children under four need a proper child seat.
The official combined figure is 7.1 L/100km. In real Dubai use, with the air conditioning working against 45 degrees and a turbo that responds to a heavy right foot, plan on something closer to 9. The 54-litre tank is the constraint here rather than the engine, and it is modest for a car this size. That still gives you roughly 600 km of mixed driving between fills, so most renters stop once in a normal week and twice if they are running airport transfers on top of errands.
Heat is the other thing worth knowing. This is a large cabin with a lot of glass, so a Tugella parked outside at midday in July gets genuinely unpleasant, and the first minute after you get in is a fan blowing hot air at you. Once moving, the system copes well and the cabin settles within a few minutes, helped by rear vents so back-seat passengers are not left out. It cools evenly rather than instantly. Park in shade or underground when you can, which is true of anything you rent here, but more so with a big glasshouse like this one.
Rent the Tugella if you are two or three people who want a quick, quiet, well-equipped SUV for highway miles and airport runs, and you would rather spend the money on how the car drives than on a badge your neighbours recognise. On that brief it is one of the better-value things we hand over. The 300 km included each day covers most weeks comfortably, with extra kilometres at AED 0.5, and we rent it to drivers from 18, which most Dubai desks will not do.
Pick something else if luggage is the deciding factor. A family of four flying in with cases should take a conventional midsize SUV with a square boot and a proper tailgate opening, and anyone who needs a third row or real sand capability should skip the coupe body entirely. The Tugella asks you to give up practicality for pace and looks. If that trade appeals, few cars at this rate do it as well.
