Scan a page of Dubai economy rentals and the cheapest numbers almost always sit next to a manual gearbox. Find an automatic near the bottom of that list and it's usually the Geely Emgrand 2025, a full-size sedan that rents for close to hatchback money without asking you to work a clutch in Sheikh Zayed Road traffic. We deliver it to your door anywhere in Dubai, normally within one to two hours of booking, cash or debit accepted at handover. The case for this car isn't that it's the outright cheapest thing on the fleet. It's that it's the cheapest one that doesn't feel like a compromise once you're loading it, driving it, or sitting in it at 45 degrees.
The 1.5-litre four-cylinder makes about 102 hp and 180 Nm, sent to the front wheels through a CVT automatic. Nobody rents this car to be quick, and it doesn't pretend otherwise. Off the line in city traffic it's smooth and unhurried, and the CVT suits Dubai's stop-start driving well: easing out of a basement ramp, holding a gap at a barrier, crawling through a mall car park, none of it needs a gear you have to think about.
On Sheikh Zayed Road it settles into a cruise without strain and holds highway speed comfortably up to around 100 km/h. Ask for a decisive overtake with four people and a full boot, though, and the CVT's habit shows itself: the revs climb first, and the pace follows a beat later. Plan the gap before you commit rather than trusting a late stab of the throttle.
| Spec | Detail |
|---|---|
| Engine | 1.5-litre 4-cylinder petrol |
| Power | 102 hp |
| Torque | 180 Nm |
| Transmission | CVT automatic |
| Drive | Front-wheel drive |
| Seats | 5 |
| Boot | 500 litres |
| Fuel economy | About 14.9 km/L combined (quoted) |
| Fuel tank | 50 litres |
| Dimensions (L x W x H) | 4,628 x 1,822 x 1,460 mm |
| Ground clearance | 151 mm |
| Colour | White |
This is where the Emgrand earns the sedan premium over a hatchback rental. The boot holds 500 litres, enough for two large suitcases and a couple of soft bags, so a DXB or DWC airport collection for two people doesn't turn into a luggage puzzle. The body runs to just over 4.6 metres, and a 2,650 mm wheelbase gives real rear legroom, not the knees-up seating you get a class down.
Two adults sit comfortably in the back, and three fit across for a short hop across town. A family of four with a week of grocery runs and mall trips has room to spare. Add airport suitcases and a fourth adult for a full day out and it gets tighter, though it's still workable for most of a week.
At 1,822 mm wide it slots into a Marina tower bay or a mall multi-storey slot without the shuffling a bigger SUV needs. Ground clearance of 151 mm clears standard speed bumps and most ramps cleanly, so you're not crawling into an underground car park worried about the front lip.
Fuel is where the cheapest-sensible case actually gets made. The quoted combined figure for the GCC car is around 14.9 km per litre, though real Dubai driving with the AC fighting a summer afternoon runs closer to 11 or 12 in city traffic. The 50-litre tank still covers two or three days of normal use before you're back at a pump, and petrol here is cheap enough that a week of driving barely dents a budget.
The rental terms are straightforward. You get 250 km a day, extra distance is billed at AED 0.5 per kilometre, and you need to be 25 to collect the keys. Two costs sit outside all of that and both fall to you. Salik bills a toll every time you cross a gate, which adds up on a daily Sheikh Zayed Road commute, and any RTA fine during the rental is yours to settle.
On heat, this car has a small advantage. It's white, and a light-coloured roof and bonnet don't soak up the sun the way a dark one does, so the cabin starts from a slightly better position than a black or grey car left in the same spot. It's still Dubai in summer, so a car parked outside for a few hours turns into an oven regardless of colour, and there's no getting around that. What works in the Emgrand's favour is size: a compact cabin means the front vents pull a baking interior down to comfortable within a few minutes once you're moving. It isn't a luxury climate system, and nothing at this price is, but it copes honestly. Park in shade when you can, and treat the first minute back in the car as the only rough one.
Rent the Emgrand if you're a solo commuter, a couple, or a small family whose week is city errands, mall runs and the occasional airport pickup. Against the hatchbacks it's priced near, you get a proper boot and a back seat that fits adults. Against a genuinely quick sedan, it's still the cheaper automatic on the lot, and for that job it's hard to beat on value.
Size up if four adults with full luggage is a regular thing for you, or if your week depends on confident overtaking at highway speed. The Emgrand does both, but carefully rather than eagerly, and a car with more power under the bonnet takes the planning out of it. Book this one for what it's built for, cheap and easy automatic city driving, and it earns the sensible half of that opening claim.
