Picture a Thursday airport run: two friends flying into DXB with a month's luggage between them, and you've booked something cheap to collect them. Boot space and who fits inside

Start with the boot, because it's the reason to pick the Emgrand over the little hatchbacks that rent for about the same money. It holds 500 litres, enough for two large suitcases and a couple of soft bags without any luggage Tetris. That covers the DXB or DWC pickup above, and it covers a family loading up for a week of mall runs and grocery hauls.

Inside, the numbers work in your favour too. The car runs a 2,650 mm wheelbase in a body just over 4.6 metres long, so rear legroom is genuinely good for an economy sedan. Two adults stretch out in the back, and three fit across for shorter hops around town. Where it tightens is four adults for a full day with all their bags. The car manages it, but a loaded cabin is also where the modest engine starts to feel the weight.

Parking and everyday manoeuvring

At 1,822 mm wide the Emgrand slots into Marina tower bays and mall multi-storey slots without the shuffling a big SUV needs. It's long, so you'll use your mirrors on a tight reverse, but width is usually what decides whether a bay is a fight, and here it isn't.

Ground clearance is 151 mm, which clears standard speed bumps and most underground ramps cleanly. The steep, sharp ramps into some older mall car parks are the only place to slow right down and take the angle gently. Around town the light steering and the CVT make stop-and-go traffic and repeated U-turns easy, which is most of what a rental does here anyway.

On Sheikh Zayed Road

The 1.5-litre four makes 102 hp and 180 Nm through a CVT automatic, and that tells you where the car is happy. Up to about 100 km/h it cruises Sheikh Zayed Road calmly and holds a lane without fuss. Ask for a quick overtake at speed with the car loaded, though, and you'll need to plan it rather than stab the throttle. The CVT sends the revs up before the pace follows.

On fuel it does its job. The quoted combined figure is around 14.9 km per litre, and real Dubai driving with the AC working lands closer to 11 or 12 in city traffic. The 50-litre tank still means filling up maybe twice on a normal week, and petrol here is cheap. Two costs sit outside the fuel and both fall to you: Salik each time you pass a toll gate, and any RTA fine during the rental.

Keeping the cabin cool

A car parked in a Dubai summer becomes an oven within minutes, and the Emgrand's advantage is that there isn't much cabin to cool. The front vents are strong and pull a 48-degree interior down to something bearable in the first few minutes, so the worst of it passes quickly. Rear passengers get vents too, which matters with a full car in July. This isn't a luxury climate system, and nothing at this price is, but it copes with the heat honestly. Park in shade or a basement when you can, and the first minute back in the car is the only rough one.

Who should book it, and who shouldn't

Book the Geely Emgrand if you want sedan space on an economy budget: a couple, a small family, or anyone whose week is city errands, mall trips and the occasional airport run. For that it's one of the more sensible automatics you can rent, with more boot and back seat than the hatchbacks at the same rate.

Size up in two cases. If you're regularly four adults with a full load of luggage, the car does it but feels stretched, and a mid-size sedan gives everyone breathing room. And if your week lives on the highway with overtakes at speed, the 100-odd horsepower will frustrate you, so step up to something with more under the bonnet.
