Who this suits, and who should skip it

Rent the Emgrand if you are a solo commuter, a couple, or a small family running errands, school drops and the odd day trip. For that life it is one of the most sensible automatics you can book, roomier than the hatchbacks at the same rate and genuinely cheap to run.

Skip it in two cases. If you routinely carry four adults with luggage across a full week, the car copes but feels stretched, and a mid-size sedan gives everyone more room. And if your week lives on Sheikh Zayed Road, be honest with yourself: the CVT and 100-odd horsepower are fine up to about 100 km/h, but a quick overtake with a full car wants planning rather than a jab of the throttle. For that, step up to something with more under the bonnet. You will need to be 25 to take the keys.
