We refuel this one less often than anything else on the sedan side of our fleet. A week's rental of the Geely Emgrand 2024 in Dubai usually comes back with the needle still above half, and on an ordinary commuting pattern most renters never visit a petrol station at all. That is the fact worth booking on. We bring it to your door in one to two hours, from age 18 rather than the 21 most desks here insist on, with 300 km a day included. What this page is about is whether a 102 hp sedan that sips fuel and swallows luggage fits the week you have planned, or whether you need something with more push.
The Emgrand uses a naturally aspirated 1.5-litre four driving the front wheels through a CVT, and the GCC figure works out at 6.7 L/100 km combined. Geely publishes consumption in this region as kilometres per litre, 14.9 in this case, and UAE listing sites regularly reprint those figures under the wrong label. If you find a number that makes this car look thirsty, it is a units error rather than a spec.
With 50 litres in the tank, the paper range is roughly 745 km. Nobody sees that here. Run the air conditioning hard through August and spend half your week crawling on Al Khail, and something nearer 8.5 L/100 km is realistic, which puts a genuine fill at about 590 km. For commuting, a supermarket run and the odd evening out, that is one visit to the pump a week.
The CVT does most of that work. It has no fixed gears to hunt through, so it holds a small engine at its efficient revs instead of shuffling between second and third every time the traffic ahead moves a car length. In stop-start driving it is both cheaper and calmer than a conventional automatic, and this is the main reason the Emgrand costs so little to feed.

| Fuel economy | 6.7 L/100 km combined (14.9 km/L) |

The boot is the reason this car works as an airport run rather than just a commuter. 500 litres takes two large hard cases lying flat with space above them for a cabin bag and a couple of soft holdalls, so a family of four clears a DXB or DWC pickup without anyone travelling home with a bag on their knees. The loading lip sits low enough that you are sliding cases in rather than lifting them over a ledge.
Inside, a 2650 mm wheelbase gives the back seat real legroom for the class. Two adults sit behind two adults without anyone negotiating over seat position, which is not something you can say about most cars at this rate. Three across the rear bench is fine for a run to the mall and stops being pleasant somewhere around the forty minute mark. That is normal for a compact sedan and not a mark against this one.
Cabin volume is modest, which is quietly in your favour when the car has been standing in an open car park since morning. There is less trapped air to shift than in an SUV, so the Emgrand turns properly cold faster than something larger with the same size compressor. Front vent output is strong once the engine has been running for a minute or two.
The usual routine still helps. Drop the windows for the first thirty seconds and let the worst of the trapped heat leave on its own before the air conditioning has to fight it.
Where the budget shows is in the materials. Hard plastics on the door tops and lower dash, seats that are supportive rather than plush, and more road noise reaching you at speed than a pricier sedan would allow. It does not stop the car doing its job. It is simply the difference you will notice if you have stepped out of something newer.
On Sheikh Zayed Road the Emgrand will sit at 120 all day without drama. Ask it for a quick overtake at that speed and the answer arrives slowly. A small naturally aspirated engine and a CVT give you engine noise first and forward motion second, so you plan your moves through traffic rather than lean on them. Around town, where you are rarely asking for everything at once, this never comes up.
It is a low sedan at 4638 mm, so take mall ramps and the sharper community speed bumps at walking pace, and stay off unpaved tracks and sand entirely. Multi-storey bays and Marina basements are manageable with a look at the camera rather than genuinely easy. Salik charges at each gate pass through to you, and any RTA fine issued during your rental comes back to the renter, so the E11 speed limits are worth more attention than usual.
Rent the Geely Emgrand 2024 if your week is city driving with airport runs attached, you want the lowest running cost we can hand you without dropping to a hatchback boot, and you would rather put the difference towards something other than door plastics. For a long stay, someone new to the country waiting on a visa before buying, it is one of the easiest cars on the fleet to live with and one of the cheapest to feed.
Book something else if most of your week is highway running between emirates. The power deficit that never bothers you in Barsha becomes tiring on a daily Abu Dhabi commute, and a turbocharged crossover will cost more per day and less in patience. The MG5 sits in exactly the same bracket and comes with more equipment for the money, while the Emgrand's case is fuel and a quiet, unfussy drive. The two are close enough that rate and availability should settle it, and we will have whichever you pick outside your building this afternoon.
